Bummer of a way to start the week. Got in, started her up, steering wheel is as hard as a rock. Check the fluid, plenty. I'm right in assuming power steering pump has seized on me?

is the belt still on the pump??
could also be the rack has seized or even the uni joints in the steering shaft

yeah belt is still on. rack or uni joints? how could i find that out without buying a pump?

Its not going to be the pump, if the pump failed you would still be able to steer. The problem is going to be deeper, maybe a siezed rack as Frank said.

take the steering wheel off and spray some crc or other penetratign lube down the steering colum and see if that helps

with the steering wheel toughness would you describe it as being similar to the steering lock that you get when you dont put the key in the ignition and turn the wheel both ways to cause it to lock? maybe there is a problem with this mechanism?
(BTW i do realise that it is not from you not putting the key in and then turning the wheels) |

hey fellas. thanks for all the replies. well the problem is now solved. I got home and started her up again, still the wheel was locked solid (is tough as when the steering lock is enabled but its not, you can feel a little bit of play).
I rock the wheel side to side a little hard and CRACK, it freed up. Now it wasnt fixed, it was still making the old falcon grouch power steering noise, but she was a bit loose. I orderred bought a new power steering pump and installed it. I found bits of crap in the old pump where the connectors hook up on the back. No sure if there was a blockage or something but installed the new one, got all the air out of the line and better than new. Worked a treat. Thanks again for all the replies. |

I am guessing that when the pump s**t itself, bits of metal may make there way into the rack itself.
If so, how do you flush the crap out ? Just interested to know how best to handle this when it happens to me

Heres an interesting one, you've reefed the wheel and freed up the rack, but the pump was still making a grouching noise. So you have replaced the pump and the noise has now gone. Have I got this right so far? So is it possible the crap you found in the old pump came from the rack? found its way into the pump and caused the noise. If the crap you found in the pump did come from the rack, then you may well end up ruining your new pump if there is any more s**t floating around in the system. Plus what damage has happened to the rack?

good point madmax...
strange that it was the pump... i still think the rack is fooked and the crunching is in the rack gears and all the meatl is from the rack and not the pump itself might be wise to place a wire mesh filter on the return line of the power steering or a inline auto gearbox oil filter
