Have had a bad tick coming from the ol ED, figured it was lifters so put it on my to do list. Tonight was giving the car some curry and had it in the red in 1st, magically the ticking disappeared! Can anyone explain what happened cos im trying to work it out myself. Did thrashing the car clear some crap in the lifter or something??

replace the oil + filter & see what happens
if you did blow some crap out of lifter, don't want to have it end up back in there

Before you change the oil, put in some Nulon Engine oil flush, do NOT drive the car with it in there, raise the engine rpm to about 1500, use a bit of Weetbix packet under the throttle stop screw, let be at hi idle for approx 30 mins, must be hot first, then change oil & filter, put in new oil, 15W40, with Nulon Lifter free, and see how that goes, can take a week or so to work.
Regular oil changes is the key to long engine life, also saves the oil seals too. Here's a 5S-FE Toyota engine that has been not regularly serviced.

yeah once your lifters bleed up with oil they stop ticking, maybe they got stuck in the closed position, and with a bit off a boot they opened up!
once you have a cam and you get noisy lifters, you will always have noisy lifters! LOTS of people have this problem, not sure why though! ive tried different oils, oil flushes, lifter free up addative, and nothing worked... then i changed the lifters, and 2 weeks later.... tick! tick! tick!
