Hey guys, i recently put a fully rebuilt au motor in my ef, and from the start it had noisy tappets. Thought this was due to it sitting for 1 year before being installed so i let it run for about 900km's and 2 oil changes and still no change. So i bought a set of brand new lifters and got them installed. It also had brand new 10w30 nulon oil put in and after about 70km's they are still the same..any ideas why they are staying clicking?

yeh the head was sent away and got a port and polish job..

its mostly noticeable at idle or slow rolling up to a light..but i can hear it at most speeds until i get over say 70 when road noise is louder..

according to every lube guide ive read they recommend 10w30 or 5w30, even ford recommends 5w30 as its printed on my oil cap. Would i better going 10w40 or 50?

you can buy a "lifter treatment" from supercheap or autobarn.might be worth a go.just changed lifters in my au,not that hard just a prick to put all rocker gear back in with out lifters falling out,a good trick is to tape them to the rocker and just remove tape when you have rocker gear back on head but before you tension the bolts

Im not a oil genious. But isn't oil that thin for turbod and supercharged engines. There is a oil guide in this forum stickied up the top.
A slightly thicker oil should reduce the noice a little. 10w40s what im going to do mine with on monday. Different car tho.

I would try using an oil that is 15w 40 or a bit thicker first, what nulon oil are you using btw? Is it synthetic or semi? Both of my cars have noisy lifters, but even after replacing them the E series engines seem to do it after 5000+ k's again any way..

I think you want about 250kph of pressure or however it converts to 2bar, about 28psi I think, don't quote me. I'd be using a penrite or nulon or castrol 15w 40w, I'm sure it wouldn't hurt.

With new austral lifters in my ED head, the tick was gone before the 100km mark, so I think that oil got the lifters pumped nicely.

Ford lists 15W40 for Turbo and LPG engines on the BA/BF. 5W30 is the wrong li8sting for oil on pre BF's.

yeh the shims were put in the right way im guessing as it was done professionally..

its a stage 2 regrind, and every lube guide ive read (no original ford ones though) recommend 10w30 for the au 6 cylinder..its now done about 600km's and still ticking so ive pretty much just wasted my money on the new lifters i think :(

ok does anyone have any ideas as to why they're still ticking?

1300km's on, 1 oil change and 1 bottle of 'nulon' lifter free and tune and they're still f**k ticking!

should i buy another set and hope for the best?
