hi guys
ive got noisy lifters/rocker gear on my vct engine between 1800rpm and 2200 rpm.? im thinking its a lifter or rocker assembly problem but im not 100% sure. as there is no noise at idle or above 2200rpm .. can anyone confirm if the std intech au rocker assembly is the same as the vct engine? im pretty sure they are but would be happier with a confirmation.. i had thought about cam chain noise but the noise is coming from the centre of the engine. i can get another std au rocker assembly for $50. but the killer is the price on the rocker cover gasket..$88 from ford and no one seems to stock or have a listing for an aftermarket vct gasket.. so im trying to confirm if the rockers are the same before i dish out $88 on a new gasket.. any help would be good............ |

It seems odd that it is only in part of the rev range, and for such a limited range at that.
I think it must be a VCT thing. But what would I know about VCT? Nuttin!!!! LOL I am very interested to find out what it is though. Cheers BenJ

im curious aswell lol
although my old au engine had the same noise (but not as bad)when i first fitted it and it quietened down after a few hundred kms and went away completely when i changed the cam shaft.. so far its done about 1000 kms since the engine was fitted and there is no sign of getting quieter.. |

Mine makes the same noise in the same range. I've thought lifters too, but haven't investigated yet. Its made this noise the entirety of my ownership - for around 3 years.
Hope you get it sorted! Let us know what you find.

Yep same noise in mine, I think it is the way they are.
The rocker/ lifters are the same as AU non VCT.

hmmm ok.
so i gather its a common thing in the vct engines??? its rather anoying! especially when your driving near a concrete devider or wall the sound bounces back at and makes it sound louder than what it is.. although its not noisy enough to think its anything to serious but it still pisses me off lol |

Same with mine. Its usually quite faint...occasionally louder on a quiet road. I spoke to a mechanic about this. He couldn't even detect the noise, but indicated it wouldn't cause a problem. Definately frustrating though! I'd like to put new lifters in when some spare cash is available, and see if it goes away. Good luck with yours.

what sort of oil pressure do other vct sixes run at? mine always runs high....maybe this is why ? put new lifters in a vct fairlane ghia really didnt do any thing so not sure if new lifters will help...

my oil pressure is about 3/4 on the guage when above 2000rpm and its between 1/4 and 1/2 at idle(700rpm) with the engine at running temp..
but the noise is the same weather the engine is hot or cold... maybe the rollers in the rockers are making that noise?? this is only a guess?? i havnt had a chance to pull the rocker gear off to inspect it yet... |

my car does the same, from around 1300-1700 rpm which sucks because thats usually the rpm range im in while driving.

mines high over half way some times on 7 ! something suss? maybe the vct has no load and it causes a little bit of valvetrain noise ? and its all around the same RPM,so this could be it but its common in most 4.0 engines i think just louder in vct.

well i changed the rocker assembly today i had a few cars to choose from but most of them were 700.000+km taxis but there was a 2001 fairmont that had been burnt out so no idea on kms but the engine looked clean so i took it from that
and so far there is still a slight rattle at the same rpm but it is heaps quieter.. as ive only driven about a km ill give it a bit of time and see if there is any difference.. |
