Right-O this is what happened....everything going well removing the head from my EF Futura. Go to lift the thing and in my carelesness I hear SNAP! Yes thats right I snapped the top part of the upper fixed timing chain guide!!!! Now my question is can I somehow slide that one out and replace it without taking the whole bloody timing case off???
If not can you buy a kit with just the crank seal, guides, and gasket or do you have to get the chain etc too? Cheers Any further hints would be appreciated! |

Timing case has to come off.
It should be bloody easy with the head off... A bit more room in the engine bay. And you can buy a kit that just has chain, guides and gaskets. If you are in there doing 1 of them, you may as well do the rest. |

My bro done the same thing last week lol
dont need to rip the engine out we just took the fans off and disconnected everything at the front because we were doing the head and the welsh plugs (how ever you spell it) we changed the chain while we were there too just in case but you will need to take the cover off to get the chain off and then change the guide be careful that none of the pieces fall to the bottom though

Ok well ford just quoted me 108 for a guide kit. My question is whether it is absolutely essential to replace the top guide if it is just the section where the bolt goes through that has snapped off? Once its back on the cam and tensioned should it be ok. Probably best to replace I suppose. Just took my head in to get faced and will now end up needing welding and machining which is a bastard! So Johnny FX you didnt need to drop the sump or anything?

If its right at the top where the bolt goes through, then you shouldn't need to change it. There are many I6's running around out there with the same part of the guide broken, and it doesnt cause a problem.

Just replace it while the head is off (its the best time to do it!).
A shortcut now can be very expensive later.

Ok Im thinking I will replace it anyway. Another quick one regarding the block/head base. There are two 'locationg dowels' one the block which seem fkn difficult to remove. I have two new ones just wondering if anyone found an easy way to get these out? I have tried pliers but to no avail next route will be vice grips and then last resort collapsing one side to release them?

You can just buy the guide, its sub $10. You need to drop the sump by removing the front bolts and loosening the rear ones to install the timing cover.

Try screwing a tap into it, then using the tap to get it out.

Yah got the fuggers out...just collapsed them. All good. Now just the wait for the head to come back. May look at replacing the air con compressor while there...are there rebuild kits for these as the internal bearing on mine sounds buggered. I think itd have an internal bearing anyway.

Offtopic, but is it absolutely necessary to remove the engine when changing the head gasket?

nah, no need at all to pull the engine for a HG.
