hello
ive heard this quote being thrown around and wonder what exactly does it mean to o ring the head? Im lookin for ideas on head work I can do to gain some power. Also what is "boring out"? I met a guy that was pulling some serious numbers and asked what he had done and he said he has just had it all bored out. So what is this? |

They run O-rings instead of std head gaskets in high compression applications... Not needed in your street Falcons.
Boring is when they machine the bores to fit over sized pistons. |

When you have the head o-ringed you still use a standard head gasket, they simply cut a small grove around the combustion area of each cylinder, then put a small wire in the grove. This wire sits higher then the deck high, so when you put your head back on the engine the wire puts extra pressure on to the head gasket, which helps it seal better. For boosted application it’s good, on a street NA engine I don’t think it would have any advantages. I would just run the standard AU steal head gasket.
This is a picture of a O-ringed block, as you can see the steal wire sits higher then the deck height. The cylinder on the far right has not had the wire put in it and you can see the grove that’s been cut.

The manufacturers actually lower the deck height of the piston so overall size is not increased.

lowering the deck height of the piston would increase engine size, but reduce compression. Its still more capacity!

Boring does increase cc.
You don't really do it to increase cc, we've always bored enough to remove any lips, gouges or oval bores. I always try and go 20 thou to allow room for another rebore down the track. You'd have to open up the bores a fair bit for any real power gain. A lot of guys actually sleeve the whole block and bore them out, std blocks don't have enough thickness in the cyl walls. |

yeah, the only things that determine engine size/displacement is bore and stroke. Deck height, piston dish etc only change the compression ratio.
And yes, there is very little performance advantage in enlarging the bores. There is very little advantage, and some disadvantages.

lol a cam and then port it go see the guys at mcnaughtons, where i got my stuff done, and they will sort you out depending how much u want to spend

These heads don't need a lot of work on the ports as such, you get a lot of gain by doing the bowls though.
When i done the head on mine i basically cleaned the casting through the ports and ripped into the bowls... It made a big difference right through the power range and from go it was very responsive. |
