My understanding is the bigger the octane number the more resistance it has until compustion, making your car burn it less often

It is NOT a measure of the actual amount of octane in the fuel. (hence you can get fuel with an octane over 100) RON is tested with a variable compression ratio single cylinder engine. Mixtures of iso-octane and n-heptane are tested. Pure iso-octane will achieve an RON of 100, and n-heptane will achieve and RON of 0. A sample fuel is tested in the engine and the compression ratio is increased until the fuel knocks. the ratio is then checked against the result from testing the iso-octane and n-heptane, if the sample fuel knocks at the same compression as say a 91/9 mix of iso-octane and n-heptane, the fuel is deemed to be a 91 RON fuel. To measure above 100ron the graph is simply extended beyond 100 at the same rate of change. Thats a great explination!

if you run 91 ron all the time one tank of 98 isnt going to do much. I found using it repeatedly gave a better result. I also get better mileage out of 98, and it feels smoother, and more mid range urge. its not a massive difference but its noticble when i go back to 91. not really noticble when i go to 98 if you get me, because the gains come on as the engine adjusts over time. So Im usuaally bumed if I cant continue to afford 98 lol.

I am on my Second tank of 98ron was using Bp now trying Mobil, and i was reading on a Bp Site that the valve springs are meant to be spotless after 10,000k's so after 16 more tanks i theoretically should be laughing !
