O.k., thrillseekers, gotta topic which will start some enthusiastic banter:
WHICH IS BETTER: A COLD ENGINE OIL CHANGE, OR A HOT ENGINE OIL CHANGE??? Let me put in my dollars worth (inflation) first: Ever since I was a young scrapper, I have been lead to believe that a hot oil change is good. b 'cos it gets all the nasties into the oil so you can dump them. HOWEVER: when I do a HOC (Hot Oil Change) I only get maybe 3.5 of the 5 litres in the engine. When I do a COC ( Cold Oil Change) I tend to get p'roly 4.5 litres of the oil out. Thus, it seem to me that a COC might be better. I should add that most ( maybe all??) of the dealers do a COC, as none of them can afford to send anybody for a 10k drive to heat the engine (oil) up for a HOC. O.k., over to youse all

I like doing oil changes when the engine is dead cold. My thinking is during the night everything in the top of the engine goes down to the bottom so then more comes out.
May be wrong but as i said thats my thinking.

Hot, (or warmish at least)
Did a service the other week, drained the oil and put the recommended 5L in and it was exactly at the full mark. And speaking of theories, who pre-fills the filter? have heard prefill is bad as oil mobs dont filter their own oil 100%. Even some truck engine manufactures void warrenty if you prefill the diesel fuel filters.

The NEW oil going in will be alot cleaner than the oil in the sump after 5k. 3. Just my two cents  MITCHY

I change mine hot. I fit the new filter empty before refilling, then top up as required after running the motor for a minute.
edit: also, I park my car in a place where I can get the oil drain pan under it without jacking it up, ensuring the car is level while doing the change, and I always get 5 litres out of it

I place some Engine Flush in then i get the car to HOT and then when it comes time i park the car in my garage (level surface without needing a jack) and then empty the sump. I will normally let it drain for about 20 minutes, so i get as much as i can out (normally i plan my oil change around something else im doing to keep my busy) and then im pretty sure i get at least 95% of it !
Also i just lube the seal of the filter i dont fill the whole thing, i think that is only good for new motors when being run in for the first time !

I heard engine flushes can be bad for your engines.

i have had a couple cases where engine flush has stuffed high km engines, oil seals started leaking and within a few weeks the engines were knocking like a b**ch..
so now i wont use it, and if you change your oil every 5000 kms you shouldnt need to use engine flush.. remember engine oil has detergents in it to help keep the engine clean.. |

and i change the oil every 10,000kms or 6 months

Totally agree. Ive been doing exactly above with no issues.

Oil changes for me are every 5000kms without fail.
Both oil and filter are done. I do mine hot so all the sludge comes out. An oil change for me is a 4 cans of Jack job. One can getting it ready and dropping the sump plug. 2 cans letting everything drain out. It takes time. One can to fill it back up after changing the filter and finish off. I dont prefill filters. Too messy. It only takes 5 seconds for it to fill under pressure. I get 4.5 to 5 litres out all the time. It just takes patience or a couple of cans. So with one change being a 4 can job if all 3 of our cars are due at the same time (more often then not the case) I can be somewhat blind by the time Im finished!

unless your driving ur car hard, and do infrequent oil changes (not advised) then engine flush isn't needed.

As EVLO98 says above, warming your engine will help remove any sludge build-up. I have also heard that engine flush can on a rare occasion block your oil pick up with crap (not good).
