I think you'll find ATF a lighter fluid than ISO 68 Hydraulic fluid.
Brake fluid is usually a polyglycol base and will attack the rubber used in hydraulic hose for oil.

indeed thats why you keep to what was reccomended for your car, different brake fluids dot3 and 4 (are closely the same) dot 5 is different and comes in 2 forms.

but anyways i romised id post up a pic of my power steering fluid... (what happens when you buy a car of a snot nosed rat thats never maintanined the car full stop.)

Dot 5 is silicone based brake fluid, & Dot 5.1 is like the dot 3&4 stuff, only higher boilling point.
I have run R1-424 in an XD V8 system and no probs. Its a better fluid for the job, thats why Ford changed to it. I run 424 in my EA and had no probs. Its been in there for 4-5 yrs now, and no leaks or the like.

The ATF goes off, and gets dirty looking. And when that ATF is off, it can make the rack have a sqeaking sound to it when turning, that was one of the reasons Ford changed to 424. The warranty periods went from 50,000k's & 2yrs, to 100,000k's and 3yrs.
