What sort of tool do you use to unscrew the oil filter? i tried a set of multigrips but the ones i had weren't big enough...Is there a special tool i have to buy?
Bit of a noob question sorry

get a long flat-blade screw-driver punch in through the oil filter and twist....simple

yeah you can get a tool or if you want it off now, 'and I assume your replaceing the filter' u can just jam a screw drive throught the side and use the for leverage, but make sure u have an oil pan to catch the goop. The proper tool is a tin loop that is adjustable to squeeze 'around' the filter and then you can unscrew it.

You are meant to do it with your hands
If it has been done up too tight then there is a wrench you can get from supercrap etc. I have one but I've only used it once or twice |

Dude , welcome to my hell....
The good old Fairys and Lilteds have a damn crappy location for the old oil filter dont they ! I actually found a tool at supercheap auto that does the job best of anything i have tried. It is a metal band that has a threaded tension handle on it , so you can loop the band around the filter then tighten the grip on the filter before turning. Its still a bit fiddly , but it gets the job done. I had the sits so bad one day that I put some paper down on the ground and the hammered a screwdriver through the damn thing to turn it. IT WORKED , but was a bit messy... Anyway , good luck with this mission.

HAHAHA thats doggy & messy & hard way.
Just go down to your local super cheap auto or who ever else & buy urself a filter remover. I have 1 which has 3 claws & u attach it to your ratchet & twist away till it grabs nicely & comes right off. Make sure the claws have rubbers on the end of them 2 grab the filter nice & tight so u wont have any slipping.

LOL i remember the first time i ever changed oil at 17, i had a little 1 liter container, undid the bolt let the oil go in, when the container got filled 3/4 of the way up i was like f**k!! low and behold oil started to spill over the side on the drive way, a whole 4 liters of it while i was running around trying to find a new container to catch what was ever left.
4 liters of oil on driveway = p****d off parents and 2 hours of cleaning

Yeah , those are good , but mine is a 5 Litre and you just cant get to the end very well to put the claws over it. Bloody things everywhere around these engines , but yes it is a good tool.

A mob called ABW make a damn good oil filter removing tool. It has 3 claws on it to bite into the filter and undo it. Uses a 3/8" sq drive ratchet/breaker bar with extension. I've had one since '96 and use it daily, never broke it. There are cheaper ones available, how long they last, i don't know.

Here's a pic of the one I use.
It only works to loosen the filter, it wont work the other way, so it is impossible for some idiot to use it to install a new filter. I only tighten them by hand.

I couldn't get mine off last week since i installed a high energy sump,just no room in a eb,i spent 1/2 hr or so with 2 other types of tools,went to super cheap auto's and bought this exact one for about $6.00 had it of in minutes
