I have a similar oil leak, appears to be comming from the bell housing??

My best guess at the moment is the rear main seal as I dont think its transmission oil.

A small rear main seal leak isn't a major concern, I dont plan to fix mine for a while. Big puddle of oil after 5 mins doesn't sound very good though.

I cant tell but I think mine leaks mainly when its cold as I dont ever have to top my oil up, but my driveway puddle is getting a bit worse lately.

Do check the back of your rocker cover first just in case. I had a mechanic tell me my rear main seal in my old xf had gone so i ended up dropping the transmission to do it. Had to lift the engine out while i was at it to do some other work, welsh plugs, timing chain, sump gasket, engine mounts etc, and found that the leak was coming from the back of the rocker cover!

I think it's more likely to be your rear main seal but just check your rocker gasket to be sure!

i did take the rocket cover off a couple of days ago and found out it was leaking. so i took it off again and put gasket maker with the gasket to make it stick and tighten the boltes a little more.. but i had this problem before i took off the rocket cover.

Just a $500 if you get a mechanic to do it, or invest 3-4 hours to do it yourself

How hard is it to replace the seal itself (not pull transmission/engine out)

Its a fair bit of work! A Workshop manual will give you a good idea!

You have to split the engine from the box, basically the quickest way is to drop the tranny, it's much easier than lifting the motor (having to d/c everything etc). Dropping trannys can be a bit of a pin but if you have an ok setup it makes it a lot easier. Take out tailshaft, take out starter motor, unplug transmission sender wires, undo transmission cooler flange pipe nuts, unbolt transmission from bell housing (this can be a c**t to do because the top to bolts are a pain in the a** to get to) and undo the cross member. I might have missed something here but that's the general gist of it. Like Wadesta said if you can get a hold of a service manual this will guide you :)
