Hey lads,
I'm losing veryyy small amounts of oil, but it's bugging me none the less. I'm going to service the car next week, as she'll be due, so keep that in mind. I jacked up the car today to have a look, and there is quite a bit of oil gathered on the bottom of the sump, and it looks to mainly be coming from the back of the sump (where it meets the block, right terminology?) I'm wondering, should I get under there myself? Spray some degreaser, wash that off, drive around for a bit to find out more? I'm just worried because you got the alternator and other electronic devices down there. Or, should I take it to a mechanic, get him to find the problem and give me a quote? Is this common? I know oil leaks are common, lol, but from the area I have described? I can confidently say there is no leaking going on at the top of the engine (where the rocker cover meets the block, right terminology again? lol), but I kind of wish there was. Would have to be easy to work on at the top, instead of down in sump territory. Any help/advice appreciated, cheers.

likely places for leaking are the sump gasket, timing cover or rear main seal. Cleaning it up and checking it regularly might help find the source. Ive found that oil can show up a long way from the leak. You might even find that it is the rocker cover at the back which is running down the block and onto the sump.

Thanks. So if it is this sump gasket, whats the costs involved in fixing that? I'll also keep in mind that bit about being far from the source.

Sump gaskets can be tricky. To do it properly you have to drop the k-frame, then the sump, replace the gasket, and put it all back together. Its a fair bit of work that is probably not worth it.
Id be tempted to get it up on ramps and degrease the hell out of it (so there are no traces of oil) and then squeezing some sealer around the gasket. Also try to work out if its sump or rear main seal leak. If its rear main then its a gearbox out job.

Mother crap, I need some ramps. I wouldn't mind taking to a mechanic, but there are no good/honest ones that I've come across.
Thanks, I'll have a play with the degreaser when I can.

u might want to try a product which stops leaks from nulon i think. i think my rear my seal was leaking and that stop it from leaking. just a thought.

i would personally leave it leaking then put any kind of additive in.
you may find that the bolts holding the sump in have come a little loose, mine were like this when i bought my el and the same happened to my cousins ef. if you try to nip them up don't go overboard, just a one handed ok tight don't hang of the rachet.

Lol, I can't even see the bolts, let along fathom getting my hand up there!
But thanks, another thing to look into.

The only time I would consider oil additive would be if I was trying a quick fix to flog the car off.
and yeah, dont overtighten the sump bolts. They really dont have to be done up much at all - basically fingure tight plus a little bit. If you overtighten them they tend to leak worse than if they are not tight enough.

Get a decent 1/4"torque wrench and check the tightness of them. When i first got me EF it was leaking from the sump and they were loose as, torquing them to the recomended spec did the trick.
Only way to remove the sump is to remove the engine first and do it with the car out, or to somehow remove the K-fram (dunno how hard/easy this would be). |

Ive dropped the k-frame on my ef. Its easier than pulling the engine, but still not something you would do without a good reason.
