Hey guys just a quicky, picked up el cheapo motoro. Bringing it up the driveway in the trailer and this ef gli motor starts leaking oil out of the bottom flyhwheel bolt holes. (Was alright till a few speedbumps smacked it around) Does this mean rear main seal or something else?
Thanks |

If it was me, I would be replacing as many gaskets/items as I could while the engine was out. I would also include in that the welsh plugs
Sump gasket Main gaskets Welch plugs Inlet man. gasket Rocker gasket Timing case seal Coil pack Spark plug leads And while the engine bay was empty: All heater hoses Power steering hoses, high and low pressure Steering rack (If it's an EF it's probably stuffed by now ) All these will be 1,000 times easier to replace while the engine is out Have fun |

+1 to what creeture3 said
Add to the list, the heater bypass piping (the one travels from the back of the water pump, wraps around the back of the engine and stops under the BBM) and give your radiator and heater core a good flush. If you're keen, new engine mounts would be good too. I like to also say that it would be wise to change all the hoses while you're at it. I didn't on my EL and I ended up splitting the heater hose at the drag strip...had to replace all the hoses while the engine was in and I'll tell you, it ain't fun.

Thanks guys, that is best practice, I know, but I'm currently getting a motor rebuilt, with a forged bottom end and head work for a turbo application. The original motor is at the shop now and everything in the engine bay that needs replacing, has been replaced. I picked this motor up for $150 to have some fun to tide me over and before I have to sell the manual. So I don't really want to rebuild 2 motors, just need to know why oil is coming out of the flywheel holes.

Oil can't be coming out of the flywheel holes, because they are drilled into the end of the crankshaft flange, and have no connection to the sump/engine
I can only assume that you mean the bolt holes that attach either the torque converter, or in the case of a manuel, the clutch plate I would suggest that the rear main is leaking, and oil is dribbling down into the holes. See above |

if the crank has no flywheel bolts in it then oil will come out,

So the engines not in the car, and it looks like rear main I'd say it is. Can also leak from back of rocker cover and look like rear main but you'd be able to tell with motor out.

Thank guys, yeap motor is out, no flywheel is in and it deffo looked like it was coming out the flywheel holes. Will double check but for 1/3rd the price of the engine I may flag the rear main for now.
