For an AU 10-30 is "recomended" from factory, but ford made a big SNAFU with that recomendation, and you should run an AU on 15-40. Problems with internal wear in a lot of cases with early AU's running 10-30 and not getting 100% TLC.

Its good insurance at no extra cost to use a semi/or fully synth 15-40.

most engine these days use 10-30. less oil drag means better fuel economy.
the AU engines also run tighter clearences.

so what changed from early AU engine to late engine that 'fixed' this 'problem' while they still recomened and used the same grade of oil.

What oil would you guys recommend i run? I'm unsure what the service guys put in.

Car is an 83 with 140,000kms but was left sitting for a while around 18 months or more ago.

Just wanna quieten it down a bit.

who said that?

did you even read this thread.

We all know engines wear. like was said already IF your engine is in good condition and doesn't have oil pressure problems or burn the original specified oil, then use that oil. i've seen plenty of well looked after
300 000km plus old engines still using the original specified oil grade.

if you had to use 20w60, then fine thats what your engine wanted.
All that i'm saying is you can't throw every high KM engine in the same basket.

just thought i might add in what we've found with the AU we bought.

from the first week we got it, we've been logging the fuel usage.

every tank its been pretty much spot on 11.8L per 100km (factory quoted is 11.5)

did a service on it a few weeks back, we had run out of 10w30 at work so i used 15w40. I did this for two reasons,
1. it's what we had
2. our oil supplier has been trying convince me that using 15w40 wont' change the full consumption.

we have been through 2 tanks of fuel since then. both have returned near on 13l per 100km

In my EF I've been running Castrol GTX3 15W40. I get lifter noise at startup but it doesn't go away. This is a freshly rebuilt head on a 230,000km motor. Any idea if it's the oil, or other problems?

did the lifters get replaced when the head was recoed??
if not you might need new lifters.
otherwise try a 20/50 oil and see what happens
