At work we use majority of cars falcons to commodores and your lasers and those other brands,Just 15/40 mobil synthetic. But on the later AU' falcons and commodores we use 10/30 GF2 and GF3 which is the same. Also use them on rodeos.Holden i think recomeneded or could have been ford that on a long trip using 10/30 you use a noticable less fuel compared to the 15/40 grade.

ok here goes.

Why don't many people seem to b using Valvoline? I use that 15-40 XLD Premium one and it seems to work really well in the car and on my wallet.

Is it John Laws that has put you all off?

well it was oil change time today so i decided to go with the 15-40 thickness oil that everyone is talking about. I used castrol. Straight away the idle was really rough and the engine started missing a fair bit (never used to happen). Took it for a drive and it only got worse. So i drained the oil out and put some new 25-60 shell older engines oil and it ran flawlessly. Now it idles and runs just as well as a car with a third of the k's on it! So the thickness of the oil plays a big part and has a much bigger influence on your car than just oil consumption!

Just warning anyone who has a car with alot of k's on it and hasn't been immaculately maintained its whole life (mine is 296000kms) that even though people on here say a thinner oil will go fine - simple fact is it doesnt. Engines get old and you need to use the appropriate oil to compensate.

OK, put some Motul 8100 5w40 in. Started her up, no noises, and actually got better oil pressure than I did with the Penrite 10w50 oddly enough.

Update: This stuff is going really good. I'm at 5000km now and still no noises, even on the -5 degree mornings.
Good oil pressure & colour is still golden.

Going to change it again soon, and put in a Purolator PureOne filter this time as well.

OK, sweet informative thread.

So a 15w40 synth oil would be a good choice for an EF mont with 160 thou on the clock?

335570km have just gone from shell LP gas mix oil which was good. but I am now using pro lube, and its far better than the shell stuff. also using prolube coolant in the falc. workin well to date.

*take into consideration that now that im driving it, it will get driven fairly hard!
