well i rebuilt it at 237,000kms and now its done 291,000kms. the mistake i did when i rebuilt it i put in normal semi synthetic 15w50. last oil i put in was the everyday hpr mineral oil 15w40. today i put in running in oil.

it probably would be acceptable if you checked your oil occasionally... is it leaking or eating oil ?
kinda sounds like your going backwards with your oil choice there pal.

too late for running in oil... sounds like the rings were not bed in properly.
thats a huge amount of oil lose over 5000km... |

yeah i think its abit late for running in oil aswell but a guy at repco who builds racing engines said the oil rings havent embedded in probably. so he said put running in oil in it cause it never had running in oil when first rebuilt it. so do yous think it needs new rings in it?

running in oil isnt really necessary, aslong as the oil was mineral oil...
if its burning oil, not much can be done except to re ring it.. |

well that sucks if i have to re ring it. do i need to re hornet the bores if i re-ring it and also when putting the rings on does the dot mark face up towards the head or down towards the crank?

There should have installation instructions with the rings.....usually, Dot to the Top. Did you make sure you didn't over lap the centre section of the oil ring assembly??? Did you make sure you arranged the ring gaps correctly??? Did you baby it while running in ???

im pretty sure i did all that i took my time rebuilding the engine. i was in no rush. because you cant buy rubber sump gaskets anymore for EF-EL would it be better to go with the AU bottom end instead? if u can still get a AU rubber sump gasket from fords?

An engine will still bed in with semi syn oil. I'd say it just wasn't run in properly and you glazed the bores. The only answer is is rehone and new rings.
This time don't baby the engine. Last edited by tickford_6 on Mon Feb 28, 2011 8:03 pm, edited 1 time in total. |

An AU sump gasket is just a shaped O'ring.....not a gasket as such.....remembering the sump is alloy on an AU......much like the rocker cover O'ring for EF, EL, XH.
