I was looking down the side of the block on (the exhaust side) of my 3.9 and noticed that it has a very thin layer of oil down it. Its not leaking coolent or anything just this small amount of oil. Looks like it coming from the headgasket. Is this anything to worry about??

could be a sign of a headgasket about to go soon. When I noticed this on my EA, i decided to change the gasket anyway and when I saw it, it was in really bad shape. I figure with cars, you can't hide a problem cause they'll end up screwing up everything else till they get your attention. In the meantime b4 you get it checked out, just keep the rev's below 3.5k.

thats what i am thinking
but its not losing any coolent and when i chaged the oil there was no milky s**t at all. its ticked over 160k. Not sure its it the original headgasket or not probably isn't

The oil runs down the intake side of the head. The only fluid you would normally see comming out of a head gasket on the exhaust side is coolant.
Could be power steering fluid, or oil leaking from the timing cover/tensioner

Or if it is like mine ... I have a sump gasket gone on the front corner of the engine (exhaust side) ... it's hitting the front pulleys and blow back along the side of the engine.
It's a mess ... but I can tell you ... I won't have a rust problem ... LOL. Have also heard it can be the tensioner as well.

although the oil leaking from the timing cover scenario does sound like the problem as there is oil on the front of the block near the pullys as well. Is this a hard or easy fix? Is this common on 3.9's?

although i've never done it, i've been told that to remove the timing cover, you have to lower the sump and old timing chain tensioners can be a right pain in the a** (well mine was anyways).
