This only happens when the car has been sitting in the heat for a while. Never on cool days.
When i start the car, the engine does not idle well at all. In fact, all it does is run very rough and splutters badly for about half a minute then idles smoothly as normal. Its something i cant work out as it only occurs on hot days after the car has been sitting a while.
Has anyone experienced the same sort of thing ar have any clues as to what may cause this? It may just be a sensor or something which is faulty. I dont know.
The car is an EL I6. It has been doing this for years but its not something that occurs on cool days, just hot days.
Any help would be great.

maybe your fuel is evaporating in the lines somehow or the map sensor is a bit dodgy?

I'll go with the fuel vapor & blocked return line to tank.

Definately sounds like the fuel is evaporating, i've had this with a few cars in the past... Only hot days and only when the car had been sitting a few hours.

Surely a properly functioning carbon cannister would prevent this from ocurring?

How hot are we talking here? You live in the desert? Or just 'typical' aussie heat - 30-40 degrees...

Hot days. eg. 30+
Just to make it more interesting, the engine runs fine when you give it a little bit of accelerator. Only when it tries to idle its like a pig.
I cant see how evaporating fuel will cause this if fuel is there when you press it a bit.

Im baffled.

Geez this is a long shot and it'd be difficult to test, but maybe the heat is affecting the throttle position sensor???

Try getting a voltage reading from TPS when the car is playing up. At idle, should not be reading any more than 0.98v

would have to be hotter than that to evaporate the fuel? i'd vote for ISC or TPS, sounds like the heat is messing with something electrical.
