edit: see below posts - bizzare symptoms no one can work out
My EF suddenly died a few days ago and is only running on 3 cylinders. Going by the symptoms it shouldn't be the coil pack but there is a chance it could be something fishy like a problem in the circuitry rather than the coil itself. I've tried everything else bar the ECU, which I suspect it may be, but I wanna rule out the coil first. If it is the ECU I'll ditch this one and fit a megasquirt. Now the hard part, I'm getting married this saturday and wanted to use my car as one of the wedding cars. If its the ECU then tough luck as I wont be able to get the MS going in time, but if I can borrow a coil and it turns out to be that I'll happily buy a new one. Any one got one laying around ?

EF and AU are different, the EF one is Bosch, and the AU one is Visteon.
I don't know if the plugs are the same.

Got one but I'm in QLD. Off topic the I have used this EF coil pack in a 4 cylinder 600cc yamaha engine, my EF, and any thing else that I want to exclude the coil from.
cheers Scott

tough luck mate. hope you get it sorted out for the big day.
i imagine it may have taken a little bit to convince the bride to arive in the EF?

What are you getting at ?!
haha, nah its not being used for the arrival. We're having the ceremony at the same place as the reception so my missus will get ready there then walk down the stairs from her room as she makes her entrance. We're just using the cars afterwards to duck up the road for photos. Anyway back on topic, I ended up taking it to an auto electrician today and after swapping out the coil packs, as I suspected, mine were ok. Turns out the cam angle sensor is not producing any signal, so I've ordered a new one of those and hopefully tomorrow it'll be up and running.

seems odd that it will only run on 3 with that dead, i had the same dead cam angle sensor and it ran fine and would ocassionaly miss

I've also got a dead cam angle sensor, and all I get is the occasional miss..
On a side note, does anyone have some instructions on the correct way to replace the sensor. |

Mine has been running rough lately, so it may have been the cam angle sensor on the way out, but looks like it's now died all together ?
It might be the computer forcing it to run on 3 cylinders, some sort of limp home mode type thing ?

The ECU cant make it run on three cylinders, only 2, 4, or all 6.
The coil packs, are actually three double head coils, so 1 & 6 fire together, 2 & 5 and 3 & 4. If say 1 is firing and 6 isn't, then there is something else wrong. Maybe a faulty lead, or a faulty coil pack, but it wont be the ecu or a sensor.. Good luck. |

If say 1 is firing and 6 isn't, then there is something else wrong. Yeah I was fairly sure it wasnt the coil because of the above but wanted to test it just incase there was some other circuitry inside the coil pack. It's not leads because I swapped them around to test and the crank angle sensor was ok too. That only left the cam angle sensor or the ECU, but turns out its the cam angle sensor - its returning a fault code in the computer and according to the auto electrician its returning a flat line on the scope instead of a square wave pattern that it's supposed to.

I take that back, it's now been at the shop for the second day and they've tried EVERYTHING and still cant get it going
The guy put in a new ECU, new leads, new plugs, new coil pack, new cam angle sensor and STILL it barely sparks on the first 3 cylinders. He had an ECU expert in to look at it, 2 other mechanics from performance workshops around the place plus a guy who only works on fords and supposedly knows them back to front and all are stumped. Anyone else got any ideas ? I dunno how its still running like this when everything has been changed! At this stage I'm thinking my best (altho time consuming) option is to convert it back to dizzy, run my own wiring loom and run it all off a mega squirt

I'd be rechecking the crank angle sensor - especially make sure the sensor and slotted wheel are clean. The ECU gets it's timing info from here, so I can't think of anything else that would cause this issue you have.
Be sure your plugs are firing properly as well. Also AFAIK, the car should still run on all cylinders with a dead cam angle sensor, just like a couple of the guys have said. All it does is tell where no1 cylinder is at for injector timing. Other thing is too is if the ECU picks up a cylinder isn't firing, the associated injector will be shut down too.

it sounds like a lack of power surpluy to the coil . have a look at the white wire at the relay box it might be shorting out

The sensor is clean, the wheel looked clean at the top from what I could see and the guys said it had a perfect signal on the scope. The injectors aren't shutting down, its pissing petrol out the back and when we pulled out the first 3 spark plugs they're soaking wet.

I wonder if its actually flooding the front three cylinders, EF are Sequential injection aren’t they..
