Hi all,
Unfortunately my first post has to be a bad one I bought a 2002 Fairlane Ghia 6 Cyl on Tuesday and I'm having some pretty bad overheating issues already! The first day I bought it, I was driving home that night and it started to overheat to the red! Obviously I pulled over immediately to avoid damage. The next day, I found a small leak at the back of the water pump where the heater pipe connects. I read that this was a common fault, so I bought a new water pump and fitted it yesterday. So the heater pipe completely stopped leaking and I took it for a drive... Overheating again. Today, I purchased a new radiator cap and thermostat with gasket. I flushed the system, fitted the items and went for another drive...Overheating AGAIN. There is not a single leak on the car and I've swapped everything except for the radiator. Aside from the radiator, could there be anything else that's causing this? I really just want to get it fixed so that I can start to enjoy my new toy!!! |

get a new radiator mate, they tend to get clogged up with s**t over time and replacing it is the best option imo

The thermo fans seem to be working fine, but I might go and get a mechanic to test out the radiator for blockages.
Any other possibilities? |

Any other possibilities? other than a blocked radiator or faulty fans... its usually not as common as e series but possable cracked head? or head gasket failing?? did it have clean coolant or rusty water?? |

The coolant seemed to be pretty ok. No traces of rust or anything...
So you think that it's pretty much narrowed down to a blocked/dodgy radiator? |

it may even be leaves and dirt build up between the aircon condenser and radiator stopping decent airflow getting through the radiator??
best to try the basics first.. |

Yeah, I had that suggested to me so I blasted the area out with a hose. Clean as a whistle.

If it isn't leaking and is still overheating, then the coolant isn't circulating enough.
Check that the lower and upper radiator hose are both hot when the car is warm. If they aren't, the thermostat isn't opening or the radiator is blocked. Chuck in a new thermostat and flush the whole system, including the radiator. Check the thermofans properly too. Warm the car up, turn the ac on max. Both fans should be howling like buggery when the car starts to get really hot, they should be blowing hot air everywhere. Goodluck! |

Just took the Fairlane out for a spin again and got it up to the spot just before the 'O' on 'NORMAL'.
I got out and quickly checked the two pipes and they *seem* to be fairly similar in temperature... Then again, it was raining and it was a pretty quick check, so I'll give it another go in the morning. Is there any possibility that the radiator could still be dodgy even though the pipes are the same temp? Thanks again for the advice! |

I'd pull the radiator out, and flush it. Run the hose through all the different inlets until the water runs out fast and clear. Could take a while. Flush the rest of the system too.
If its really bad, you may have to take it to a radiator joint and get it cleaned out. Its hard to help over the net, but thats what I'd be doing next from what you described. I'd say if the thermostat wasn't opening at all, one hose would be much colder. Have you triple checked that the thermofans are good? Idle it with the AC cranked to 16C, and let it warm up. They should be howling away. |

Ok, I'll give the radiator a proper clean out tomorrow. Hopefully that's the issue and the cleanout fixes it!
The thermostat is brand new, as in a day old... I noticed that the car seems to be 'behaving itself' a little better since the new thermostat and radiator cap have been fitted. It's still overheating, just not as quickly and severely. |

Maybe even hunt out a radiator joint thats open tomorrow, and take it in there and ask them to clean it out and check it. You can certainly do it yourself, it may be very gunked up though if the car is overheating, and I'm not sure if just mains pressure water will be enough if that is the case.
If worst comes to worst, a radiator for an AU will never be expensive or hard to find new |

Yeah, I've looked up prices on eBay and it seems to generally under the $200 mark.
If I blast it out with a hose tomorrow and it all flows out ok, that should mean it's fine, yeah? |

I'm not real sure to be honest. I'm no mechanic, just telling you what I know.
At the very least you will get an idea of its condition. Let us know how you go. |
