Hello all,
RE. Overheating an XH. van when towing, I have fitted a new 3 row radiator, heavy duty trans oil cooler , water pump and had engine flushed. still overheats when towing. Is an ex. police vehicle, don't know what they have done to motors. I think it can't get enough cool air. Any ideas? Peter.

I should have mentioned, I have it converted to lpg / petrol
I have had it tuned many times, I don't think timing would be to far wrong. Peter.

it may sound stupid, but is there a snorkel/intake setup on it? my mates folks got their car back from ford - wondered why it was overheating - was due to the fact that ford hadn't refitted the snorkel so the car was sucking in hot air

Has the radiator ever been removed, taken apart, cleaned of all casting sand, rebuilt etc. And maybe what opto said, maybe a 91de thermo over summer?

to all,
overheats on both petrol and lpg . Has new radiator and hi flow therostat, block has been cleaned. Has standard cold air induction fitted. Tows 9mt. boat (legal) My thoughts are it just can't get enough fresh air through oil cooler then condenser then radiator. bumper (air intake is minute) is the same as is fitted to EF. Thanks, Peter.

To all,
As I said in the origional post this is an ex Police vehicle. I bought it at auction . To get it registered I had to change the exhaust system to standard and change a few other non engine things. It didn't have a front bumper fitted (I bought it damaged) , Does anyone know if these vehicles have internal mods which may change the scenearo? Peter

Have you checked to see if the condenser is clogged with leaves and other crap and preventing air flow through it?

The engines are all the same.
Does you XH have thermo fans? And if it does, do both of them work. Just having one of the fans not working can easily make the temp gauge go up another 1/4 to 1/3 above normal in stop start traffic. Let alone when your towing a massive load. But thinking logically, you have an I6. Towing a 9m load in a fairly hot part of Queensland. I'm guessing the boat weighs in at way over the 2500kg mark (remembering the car is only designed for 2300kg max). No wonder it would be getting hot. Hell, even my car gets hotter than normal towing a car on a trailer on a 20deg day. Maybe a last resort would be to put a 72deg themostat in, rather than the standard 92deg one. It sounds like you've done everything else, apart from checking cooling fans. |

yep check the cooling fans. thats what was causing my car to overheat. got them rewired and the temp gauge doesnt even go past the N on the gauge. yay!
