Hi all. Somebody told me that oxygen sensors can be cleaned of carbon build up by heating with oxy-acetaline till they glow dull red. Any truth in this?

Thats a cheap skate's way of trying to clean them. Better off fitting a new one.
You can test them with a multimeter, they make their own voltage up to 1 volt. They cycle up and down when at operating temperature.

Figure out whether the engine is running lean or rich and adjusts the a/f ratio to suit. This is why when old or faulty they can be attributed to high fuel usage.
