Hey guys i would like to paint my extractors and have some questions because last time i bought the cat and extractor gasket and just gave them to my mechanic to fit.
There looks to be some gasket sealant in between the extractors and the head, even though they fitted a gasket aswell is it nesecsary to have, and is it hard to take off? Also should i use some more gasket sealer next time i put the headers back on? Also Last time i got the Cat gasket when fitting for my mechanics to fit the system i gave it to my mechanic and later on he told me it wasnt the right one and he just swapped it with what he thinks is a commodore cat gasket. So can i just use sealant between the cat and header flange or do i NEED a gasket? The reason i ask is because my Mechanic moved the Strathalbyn so i cant ask these questions, mainly the one of what cat gasket did he get ! Also what end is easiest to tighten first?

Goo between head and extractors: not necessary, I just used the gasket that came with my pacies which is a metal gasket, that "gasket maker" goo is f**k messy stuff and not really necessary unless the 2 edges are uneven or you dont have a gasket. I remember spending about half an hour one time taking the goo off my rocker cover edge with a scraper, so yeah it can be a pain in the a***.
Id try to get a extractor-cat gasket rather than just sealant (there is some pressure on this joint as the engine gets load it moves which moves this) but if you cant then you cant. There is a type of s**t you get its like black silicone, this is better than gasket maker in this situation because its a lot thicker dont know what is called though. So as I said if you can just go buy new gasets and do it properly. $20 for the both of them is well worth it.

Is it called Black Silicone or something like that and is made by Permatex? Which one below would work best for the cat?
http://www.permatex.com/products/Automo ... ealant.htm http://www.permatex.com/products/Automo ... Gasket.htm http://www.permatex.com/products/Automo ... _Maker.htm If so i will order a cat and extractor gasket and get some of that silicone and if the cat doesn't fit then looks like silicone will have to work !

No mate the stuff Im thinking of is none of those and seeing as its in my dads shed I couldnt tell you the name for 2 weeks. Any car place will have cat and extractor gaskets. If you cant get them just go into a car place and get the thickest heatproof sealant they have the thin red stuff is useless.

Your going to need some very high temperature sealant if it's sealing the cat. The cat can get upto 600 C if it's hot enough, there is a sealant out there that i've used. I'll have a look down stairs and see if I can find it for you mate.

a post above says the cat can get to around 600 degrees, i've permatex ultra copper on a second hand gasket and had no probs.
gaskets are not dear at sprints, take your old one in as a sample, or go to your local exhaust place |

Well i order an extractor and cat gasket from motor traders and if they are different well i may take it in somewhere to try to get another one
So i could use my current cat gasket and permatex ultra copper or copper max ! I also saw this tailpipe and muffler stuff at Autobarn says its cat safe but not what temp it can take, it says that it is used to fix leaks in the exhaust. If i use my current cat which has only been on the car for at most 6months what would be the best stuff to use?

yeah its in a red and white tube, toothpaste size. its made for exhausts, wont be a problem, dont put it on too thick about 1mm or so is good.
are u going to have the extractors bead blasted this time or will u be happy when it starts flaking off in 3-6 months? colour is a personal choice, i guess u have a blue rocker cover to match but black or silver also fit in well with the black block and silver with the log intake manifold and head so... i would buy either the vht exhaust paint or septone, i've had good results with both. i used septone silver on my brother inlaws ED pacemakers after having them beadblasted (cost $20), done 18 months ago with septone and they still look good as the day they were done. here's a recent pic |

I want to repaint my rocker cover a green colour so i think i may go blue or silver for the extractors ! But i dont have the time to get them bead or sand blasted, so i will just see how long i can get away with a diy job !
The stuff i saw at Autobarn for an Exhaust wasnt as big as toothpaste it was a bit smaller same as below actually http://www.getprice.com.au/Permatex-Muf ... 510705.htm Also i will be buying VHT Flame Proof Paint !
