The engine doesn't get too hot, quite a few paints should survive this temp. i dont recommend using a 1 pack lacquer as these dont cross link and next time you go to wash it down with a grease/oil remover it will kind of wash away. wax and grease removers are weak solvents so that you dont damage the coating your wiping but i still find they eat into it a bit. just remember if its a 2 pack epoxy isocyanate dont breath it in. just some trivia now, holdens are painted with a 1 pack lacquer. fords however get a clear 2 pack epoxy topcoat which is solvent resistant due to the high cross link density. the engine enamel spray cans can be an alkyd resin. enamel in the name suggests that 2 parts are reacting. the formula will also have whats called driers that speed up the reaction of the alkyd with oxygen in the air. or once the engine is on, heat causes cross linking. if your spray can says its an epoxy this is a oxygen reacting epoxy resin. the high temperature paints like vht and k&h are silicone resins which when going through the correct curing from heating eventually form an inorganic network that is heat resistant.
