Have always used HPR15 on my EF FAIRMONT, 225,000 Kms no oil burning. Oil pressure sits usually 3/4 but drops a bit below half way during warm weather. Would it be better to run a thicker oil such as HPR40 instead of HPR15 during summer to maintain higher oil pressure when running hot. A friend of mine runs it on his ED Falcon and swears it runs a bit quieter and better oil pressure and protection in hot wheater.
Your thoughts appreciated. |

I wouldnt go HPR 40 no way!!! Mabe HPR 30, but definately not 40, thats way too thick to be run in a car with only 225,000kms..
But in my opinion i still reckon HPR 15 would be fine

I'd stick with what you are using, I changed once and regretted that. Your oil pressure is fine. Hell mine sits about 1/4. Doesn't worry me the slightest!

Also i might just add that because the oil pressure goes down on a hot day could also be because the battery is on its way out, if the volts meter goes down and the battery looses power than that will also make the guages go haywire.
So yeah batterys can get pretty worn out on a hot day trust me lol. Not saying thats why the oil pressure gets low, but just a caution etc. Cheers

Doesn't oil pressure drop once the car warms up anyway, so on a hot day, oil temp would be hotter so would go down more?

That's the point.
Running an oil that is thicker when warm to compensate for this.

dont change from what you are using...
thats why multi grade oil was invented. so you dont have to change from winter to summer. i use hpr10 all year round. |

This is the info for HPR40 from PENRITE WEBSITE
A 25W-70 high viscosity engine oil for use in conventional engines and ideal for summer use or where climatic temperatures necessitate an oil of a higher viscosity. Also suitable for petrol engines with aftermarket turbochargers operating in high speed, high temperature conditions. Car manual does specify 25W50, may give it a try when the weather gets hotter, dont see any major issues?

please tell me your joking, 25/70 in a faclon with 225k on it.
don't do it, you'll only ruin the car, if you wanna run some thicker oil then go hpr30 not 40, that is way too thick.

Car manual does specify 25W50, may give it a try when the weather gets hotter, dont see any major issues? the temp change in our summer does necessitate the use of thicker oil if winter was -10 ans summer was 40+ every day you might consider using 2 different oils. but even then the summer oil need to be no more then 20w50. If your oil is getting that hot it becomes to thin you need an oil cooler fitted. not thicker oil |

25/70 makes me think of Golden Syrup trying to sludge its way around your Motor. Yeah like others have said not good and 6 months down the track....ppput... Kaboom!

that penrite hpr30 served me through last summer, this winter and have got another bottle for my next service for summer. my ea falcon goes great with this.

Called PENRITE to get their opinion and they directed me to HPR15 all the way. The 60 rating of the oil covers more than enough for our summer conditions as was advised. Cant complain with HPR15 great oil and probably the best semi synthetic for the EF\EL Series.
