It heats the air entering the engine less creating a denser fuel/air charge thereby developing more power. Cooler induction air is less prone to induce spark knock so the ECU can run more aggressive ignition timing resulting in greater power. this explanation from an american site
in the case of a factory management system, it may well run the engine richer, ie. engine starts rich due to cold combustion chambers, and slowly pulls back the fuel quantity until at normal operating temp. However, 10deg from operating temp wont have any affect on the ecus mixture control But, 10deg cooler coolant temp WILL have an effect on charge temp. The air will absorb less heat as it travels through the manifold, inlet runners and inlet port. To the point where in the Autronic management system, we have a table called 'charge temp estimate' this table is used to setup a fuel table correction, which is based on rpm and coolant temp. It is used to correct mixture differences caused by the heating of the inlet air as it passes into the engine, there is a method to go about adjusting this table, which, when set correctly, will mean no matter what coolant temp u have, you will be running the correct A/F ratio..... NOTE: as rpm increases, the coolant temp has a smaller effect on charge temp Some may ask, isnt that what you have a intake air temp sensor for, NO, an intake temp sensor can only measure the air temp within the plenum chamber, there is a difference between intake air temp and charge temp. The charge temp is the heating of the air once it has passed the IAT sensor

I like to see how much wear 82 degree stat will do.

Rank rotary fitted an 82 degree thermostat to my EB when I had it turbocharged.
It made 130rwkw more than before the thermostat change. |

I think it's more because the factory BA thermostat actually runs quite hot, and the aftermarket one gives you a bit more of a safety margin if you're going to flog it (which obviously you are if you're installing other performance stuff) especially on a hot day or something. Saying it'll give you a power boost seems a bit much to me though, I didn't notice any difference with mine.

I had an 82° in my EF but driving to the adelaide hills every morning at 3am for 20kms i found the car would never reach operating temp and this killed fuel economy because its running too rich.
I put the stock one in and found that much better but i thought of drilling a hole in it to make it a little cooler.

im gonna order one of these and put it to the test( do a mythbust, and yes im fixated with mythbusting), they arent that expensive, i dont expect a gain in anyway, but i will document before and after and put on youtube the vids, we shall see exactly what happens

I run a 72 degree thermostat, but thats because I run on LPG pretty much all the time.
LPG Likes lower engine temps, gives the gas vapor more RON's!!

If you're worried about a few degrees temp, why not put an XF thermostat in? they run at 88C, 4 degrees cooler than stock, but not as low as 82C. I have one in mine for about 3 years now, and I tow a lot, even in summer, and it's been great. But the again, you need a cooling system that is in working order, as putting in colder thermostats to control rising engine temps can be seen as a band-aid solution to engine overheating.
