i went to check the oil today & found it fairly thin & smelling a helluva a lot like Petrol, ive had a google search but it all i can find are answers which relate to carburetor engines & mechanical fuel pumps. im running a 300k EL Falcon that has been regularly serviced, it doesn't blow any smoke either on start up or on wide open throttle although the tail pipe looks a little more blacker then usual but it still doesn't blow any smoke and it doesn't smell rich?
it seems to be running as well as it ever has, there is no misfiring, no hard starting, no excessive fuel use, no behavior to indicate a problem (or an upcoming catastrophic problem?) so i don't know what the problem is? just reiterate there is no smoke, no black smoke, no white smoke, no blue smoke.

Injector leaking the residual pressure from the rail after shutdown down past the rings (high K so it might not be sealing so well anymore) and into the sump? might not be leaking enough during operation to cause issues

a leaky/stuck injector? it could be. i did have all injectors replaced about 30k ago but they were the cheaper brand since the genuine Ford product wanted about $600 for the set!

have a fuel pressure tester connected and leave sit overnight will give you a basic indication if leaking injector (keep in mind some loss of pressure is usuall after switching off and could also drop if other components have faults ie.pump check valve-fuel pressure reg etc.block lines if necessary,to test) is oil level increasing at all- change oil and monitor condition and level- remove small amount of oil and CAREFULLY light does the oil burn like fuel ? dont do this near car or house just in case .

Blowby. Rings are either almost shot or are shot. Because the car batch fires there is fuel being injected on a non ignition cycle, this is then being pushed past the rings on compression and mixing with the oil. a heavier oil will help for a while but long term, pretty terminal. The thinned oil will cause the bearings to prematurely wear resulting in knock.
But that is probably a little way off yet, just step up the oil thickness a few grades and go from there. A comp test and leak down test will hopefully prove me wrong though.

a terminal engine i kept this damn thing serviced every 15-20k like clockwork and it's gonna packup on me grrr.
anyway update; after taking a quick trip out of town i had to overtake an idiot driver & as i looked back to see him eat my dust i noticed some fine but dark smoke (with my foot to the floor, nothing on normal driving) i went with the theory that it was a sticky injector, so i added some cleaner to the tank & ran it through, so far i haven't noticed any fine dark(ish) colored smoke(?) but I'm still not convinced, i'll get a compression test done.

15-20k? ELs should be serviced every 10k. I do all my cars at 5k.
Also, that bottled injector cleaner does nothing. Just another marketing scam

Just another marketing scam I also do mine earlier than recommended by ford, 15-20k is ridiculous on a high km e series engine no wonder its about to s**t its guts lol. Then again so many people don't believe cars need servicing past their warranty and just pay for reco engines/another cheap car every few years

f**k that. My EA has done 311,***kms and is serviced every 5000kms. Burns a little oil but no abnormal noises, still has plenty of power etc.

I love how they recommend oil every service but a filter every second service.ryco Filters for e series are always on special for $7 at Supercheap so why bother putting clean oil through a dirty filter

Service intervals should be based around the quality of oil used, technically...
But ive always done mine every few thou too...and after some hard driving, ill drop the oil and trans fluid too... Have you taken an injector out and looked at it? Im keen to hear whats goin on, its bizarre! Not inlet manifold gasket or egr etc issues?

The "interim/intermediate" service (just oil, no filter) is stupid. Old oil is still in the filter, as soon as car starts its mixed through the new stuff...
Correct me if im wrong, but I dont think genuine/motorcraft filters have an anti drain back valve?

the reason i service every 15-20k is cost based, money is very very tight when your living in a mining town but are not a miner
it's not like i flog the "bejeesus" out of it, the car has been used a lot on the H'ways and freeways because i use to commute 2hrs to work and back but since that job went bust it's runs have slow down considerably. oh and i ALWAYS use a fresh filter on every service! with Penrite 20w/50

5L of decent oil is a bank breaker, ill agree... Have you seen the rrp of penrites racing stuff!? Jeeberz!
Penrite "what" are you using? If its fully synthetic you'll get more ks out of it, dumping the oil every 5 is more for just the mineral based... (or if you're in love with your car, which I also get.) Just use a decent filter, especially if your going to "stretch" the times out... And fill it with fresh oil before screwing on, too. That way it keeps the pump from ever running dry. (in case you didnt already do that.) Anyways, hows the octane boosted sump mystery coming along? Is your car mechanical fuel pump by any chance? Could be simmilar to what happens with a lot of dpf's...
