High Guys I'm a new starter so i'm just learning about posting.
I've just pulled an EL motor to bits and shortly will be stripping a 3.9 CFI out of EA. So as soon as I figure out how to post, post pictures and all the other stuff, I'll send you some aswell as my own findings as to the difference in cranks. |

cheers mate (welcome to the forums as well)
can you tell me how many counterweights the el crank has?

EA to ED - same crank as XF if you have ever seen one. Not sure on number of counter weights - think it was 8 for some reason.
EF - 12 weights - same size main and big end bearings as EA to ED EL - 8 weights - same size main and big end bearings as EA to EF EL Hybrid - 8 weights - main size is same as AU (67 or so mm from memory) and big end same as EA to EL AU - EL Hybrid crank |

Thats what I thought, but Ive seen pics of AU cranks and it looks to me like they have 12 counterweights
I did some more research and found that ea and eb1 were the same, it was revised in eb2 and again for ef. When the AU came in it had bigger counterweights. No mention of a crank change between ef and el was mentioned but I have been hearing for years that EF was the one and only crank with 12 counterweights. The only thing I know for sure is that the EF does have 12 counterweights because thats what Ive seen with my own eyes.

I know the EL Hybrid has 8, as I rebuilt my engine and lifted the crank in and out myself.
And I know the EF has 12, because I rebuilt an EF engine 2/3 weeks later. It definately had 12 as it was nearly a 2 man lift |

Plus I thought it was well documented that EL went back to 8 weights.
You can feel the difference between driving an EF, EL and EL hybrid. |

ive read it as well but what I read and what I see seem to be different things which is why im after some pics. Maybe ill just head down to u-pullit and pull a whole lot of engines apart to satisfy my curiosity.
I know what you mean about the EF crank, they tip the scales at 29kg.

I have spoken to a few people and so far the consensus is
EA-EB1 = 6 counterweights EB2-ED = 8 counterweights (late ED's get EF cranks) EF = 12 counterweights EL = ? - probably the same crank as EB2-ED EL hybrid & AU = 8 counterweights, but bigger than EB2-ED and also have bigger main bearings I got confused because I pulled a ED engine down the other day and it had a 12 counterweight crank, but it looks like it was a late model ED and got a few EF bits.

I would guess the EL got a similar design crank to the AU, but with the smaller main bearing size.
As for those ED motors, they are the hybrid of the ED range. You found they had an EF crank, and chances are they would have gotten an EF head and block as well, but with an ED cam. The rocker covers were a 50/50 ED/EF style. They had the square ED design, but the 1/2 moon bits in the head would be cast as part of the cover in the rounded EF style... No rubber 1/2 moons there. Seems to be as much of a bastardised engine as the EL hybrid with bits and pieces of both models. I think these engines were mainly found in the XG/XH models of the time. Where everything was pretty much EF except for the intake. |

The rods are EF as well, but the pistons are the low comp 91DA EB2 items. The rocker cover is as you say - looks like an EA/EB but uses ef/el gasket. This one also had a 94DT cam in it, but not sure if that was the previous owner or factory.

Bastard Ford hey... lol...
Everyone bags the EL hybrid... I wonder how many know of these wonderful ED hybrids as wel... Chances are the block has the knock sensor hole drilled and tapped as well. I think they started using 94DA blocks in earlish 94. As I've wrecked an early 94 ED XR6 that had a 94DA block, but had the ED crank and head. |

Yeah, Ive got one of those in my EBII wagon. The engine is from an XH, and yeah, knock sensor, no rubber half moon, EF bits everywhere lol.
Cheers
