iv had pinging problems for a while and people suggested fuel filters, spark plugs etc but lookin around the engine i found that the ignition module has partially melted and 2 of the 4 wires are hanging out which i think do the advancing and retarding can anyone add to this? i also have a spare ef so i can replace wires if this is the problem

What ignition module?
Where abouts is it? The EDIS6 is built into the ECU on EFs. Check for fault codes to see if theres a faulty sensor.

the ignition module on the side of the block where the dizzy is in el's near the bottom

The cam angle sensor.
Strange that that's melted That shouldn't be causing it too ping though, it really doesn't do much in respect to the ignition. Unless the crank angle sensor is playing up as well? Do a diagnostic and see what codes it throws up.

Although in the EFs the cam angle sensor (where the distributor is meant to be), doesn't really do anything, and is mostly a plug.. in fact I think it was just a plug in some of them (no sensor at all). Only in the AUs with the sequential injection did it come into play..
But apart from just babbling s**t, I do have usefulness to add - The wires been melted don't really matter (they decide which strole the car is on when it's starting to help it start or something like that)... If it's pinging I'd be more looking at first of all, your knock sensor, and then plugs, leads, fuel.. And just make sure it's definitely pinging and it's not some other sound which is similar to pinging ( *pictures your mate sitting next to you with a bag of marbles*...) Cheers

it is pinging mate im 100% sure, i was certain they didnt have a knock sensor only an oil pressure switch as that is what the wreckers gave me when i asked for a knock sensor. iv replaced the plugs with colder ones and ran it on premium. still pinging its a** off not many other possibilities ,but off the line it loses that much power its not funny.

they definitely have knock sensors... it's not where the oil pressure switch/sender is.. it higher up, just under the manifold between cylinders 4 & 5 from memory..
Other things which can contribute to pinging are bad combustions, so things like oil getting in and lowering your octane, or just build up of s**t... has the timing been played with at all? Cheers

nah the timing hasnt been played with as it is an ef which cant be changed

yes it can be changed.

I forgot it was an EF...
lil_lincoln - care to elaborate how to change ignition timing on an EF? Without chipping the ECU? Or changing the ECU? I must be getting rusty if there's a way and I can't remember. Cheers

Modify the crank angle sensor mount
I doubt thats been done.

yeah exactly, ecu change, chip. im just saying it can be.

yeah but it hasnt, would the engine not having a knock sensor make it ping? i know it stops pinging but would it prevent it from happening or does every motor ping a bit?

The knock sensor just lets the ECU know if it's knocking, then it's down to the ECU to decide what to do... the general algorithm goes something like - ping, take the timing back, wait for x amount of time, of no pinging, put the timing back up... if it pings again, take the timing down, and so froth. This has a limit however, I can't remember of the top of my head what the hard limit is, but I think it can only go back 10 degrees timing. So if it's still pinging at that point, well you shouldn't really be driving hehe.
So it's really a safety for those temporary times, like bad fuel, broken sensor, whatever it may be... so unplugging the knock sensor shouldn't make a difference.. look at the EA/EB/ED (except the later ones), they had no knock sensor at all. So I would ignore the knock sensor for now and look elsewhere. Cheers
