My mechanic reckons the dull mechanic crank noise at startup is piston slap. I get it for a couple of seconds on first startup until the oil circulates.
Would this cause loss of power to the motor at all, can it be fixed fairly easily, and why would I have that problem when I don't abuse the car?

does it make the same sound as u get a lil higher in the revs?

my last car had a same kind of sound (piston slap kinda thing) wen i fist started it up, it got worse, cuz i treated it like s**t, and then started making the same noise as i got higher in the revs, and then it broadened out over the rev range, wen i finally could be bothered to go to the mechanic, he said my bigends were about to slam through the side of the engine, lol, so that was the end of that car, 2 engines later, and i wasnt goiuung to buy a third..

No. Just a cranky noise on startup for a few seconds, until is totally goes away with oil circulation.

abuse generaly has little to do with it. Maintenance or lack of it during the life of the car is the biggest factor with a problem like that.

remember your car is 10 years old now, you'll have to expect to be showing signs of its age

The thing is though, it's been well looked after.

Oil change every 10,000 or less. Mostly less.
Radiator rebuild, coolant is always clean. Original head gasket at 166,000km.
No oil smoke.

I might try thinner oil next time. Maybe I can get away with thinner oil, improves fuel economy too I heard.

your problem has been bolded.
10 000km is too long far too long to leave oil i the engine. 5000km never more, no mater what the engine ar what the service book says.
and thats for a general use engine. as soon as you start modifying or givinf the engine a hard time you should change it even more often.

should have been changed when he changed the oil, might be worth an overhaul tho, drain, fill with new oil and new filter.

hi
does your oil pressure drop when your engine is a operating temp??
if so you may have the first signs of worn bottom end bearings..
my car does the same thing... (dull knock at start up) and slightly low oil pressure after a long drive or when i give it a thrashing...
i had a engine that did the same thing a few years ago.
and about 6 months later it got a bearing knock.
i could be wrong.... but any kind of knock is not a good knock...

You reckon? A lot of taxi's will only change oil every 10,000km's, and still be kicking around 700,000km's later!
However, I don't disagree with you, I'd rather run a slightly cheaper oil and change it more often myself.

true, however i think i read somewhere that the difference with a taxi is that there always running, less running when cold (when most damage is done.)
