Hi all,
I've been reading up on plasma ignitions and for roughly 350 aud including postage you can get one for a distributer 6cyl motor... depending on the boost to HP and economy, thats not a bad price.. Just wondering if anyone had given it a shot and what your experiences where. The boost in spark power can be massive and that leads to much faster burning of mixture, more complete combustion and less emissions.. so in other words, in theory (and the tests I've read) you get a boost in HP with a reduction in exhaust emissions. And since the engine efficiency is up, you also get an improvement in economy.... Sounds great, but I'd love to hear from someone that has tried it on an I6, especially one that has had the usual exhaust/intake/cam mods. rgds Frank |

Theres a thread on this.
Have a search and read the whole thing, it's hilarious.

MSD or Crane Hi 6.
Anything else is an imitation.

As I understand it. it isn't really about how to get more of the mixture to burn although its definitely the more the better, its about the speed of combustion and the creation of heat in the combustion chamber which will likely result in more mixture burning when it can actually help rather than later on.. the faster it gets hotter the better.. hence swirl and quench, turbulent flow currents have been found to burn much faster.
Anyway, all it does is makes a much better use of the power supplied to a plug... Its explained very well by an outside party here: http://www.gofastnews.com/board/technical-articles/689-plasma-ignition-promo-parley-pratical-power.html With some dyno results.. the gains are not massive, but they are there. rgds Frank |

Just reading the plasma plugs thread.. hilarious..
having said that, read the link I posted above, it goes into much of the same things that Delta was talking about and has actual dyno results.. (average improvement power wise was 2 or 3 hp and similar improvements in torque.. but didn't mention economy or emissions... But having said that, this was tested on a late model mustang with what is likely to be a much better standard ignition then the e series I6 has, which would possibly mean our potential improvements could be bigger. |

Just read that site, bit different to the plasma plugs thing.
I don't get the science behind it, beyond me. It sounds like the "plasma booster" box is just an ignition box like a crane or MSD, which boosts power to the coil, and does multispark. And they've just whacked plasma into the name to make it sound cool LOL

Steady ED, yeah, I thought much the same thing...
But names aside.. the dyno results certainly look interesting.. was the reason I asked if anyone had experience over here.. As I understand it, they make a spark which hugely higher intensity, for a shorter period of time... The other thing that adds to the creditability, is that they are not claiming unbelievable improvements. |

by the looks of it, like has been said, it's a multi spark CDI with a new fancy name.
I've already proven that fitting a multi spark CDI to an I6 works and works well. with improved 1/4 times, but more importantly a higher MPH figure. you'd be better off sticking with either MSD or CRANE, at least there is after sales support for them in OZ |

Lighting bolts do this also, Ive personally seen one that landed within 15 feet of my front door, and there was a ball of blue flame that ignited about 3 feet off the ground, perhaps 4 feet in diameter. It stayed for about half a second before dispersing. you can see the spark burning the air in the comparo pic. Id say any increase in spark delivery capability is a worthwhile upgrade, as it will help when it comes to adjusting advance and retardation on ignition timing. I wouldnt be suprised with a 3-5 kw at the wheels increase on an i6 when tuned in. Before I get the au flash tuned Ill post away for one of those screamin demon coil packs from the US, and a set of 10mm leads (it says they can burn out 8mm leads...). will be interesting to see the results for the money. (100 bucks for the coil pack, 100ish bucks for the leads, and 500 for the flash tune on the dyno.) someones gotta do it

I might actually grab one of those plasma things.. but we will see... other things I want first like a supercharger..

if you can wait a month or so i should have my s**t together and try out this coil pack with the flash tune. rest of car is stock so we can see how much power can be made for aound 700 bucks.

k, well a month is sooner then I was planning anyway...
I've been bitten by the supercharger bug, and it'll take a while before that goes away and I can get back to biz as usual. |
