I need a new thermostat for an El hybrid. i think its 92C and i want an 82C??
can you suggest a good brand? and how to install it myself?

why do you want an 82c thermostat? perhaps tridon may do one to fit? surely you should know how to change it if you know what type you think you need.

why go for a different thermostat when it'd be easier and cheaper to get a stamdard replacement part??

Some people seem to recommend an 82C thermostat for economy. I wonder if anyone else can put up a convincing argument for 82C over higher?

Im not sure about the temp, but running a thermostat too low will make getting to operating temperature take longer, which I believe causes the engine to run rich, which would be counter-economical.
As I say, I dont know what temperature this happens at, just food for thought... |

Other way around.. 92deg thermostats are for economy, because: a) The engine is tuned to run at its optimum at 90 to 95 deg b) Certain fuel saving aspects only kick in over a certain temp c) Hotter engines are able maintain emissions standards and still run a tad leaner Running an 82deg thermostat would only cause the car to thinks its running in its warm up stage and cause more fuel to be injected. Some people put them in to counter the engine overheating in hot conditions... But in reality that is more caused by poor cooling system maintenance than hot weather. |

to install, take off Thermo. housing when motor cold you will loss about .5 litre of coolant plus push a rag in thermo holder and clean around, old thermo which has a rubber seal around it -clean that seal and put on new thermo, use silicon around seal (( some thermo's come with a new seal or you can buy seperate- use that if available)) now bolt it up leave for about a hour to set top up coolant. Keep old thermo in case you picked the wrong heat range I have a 82 degree in my EL as it tends to get abit hot in peak hor traffic on very hot days

I am currently running an 82 degree thermostat made by tridon. cost $18.
Really good improvement in performamnce and fuel economy hasn't changed. BPT performance shop sells 82 degree thermostats and they have done tests etc for fuel economy etc. The only reason why ford used 92 degree thermostats was to meet emission regulations, to get the head temp hot enough to burn nitrogen oxides. cheers..
