just wondering what the plug is for at the back of the AU VCT head, it might be on all AU i6's, there's no plug at the back of my EF head, Is it a temperature thing?

See my build thread... I just did it... Link in my sig below...
I pulled the sensor out... It only screws into aluminium... They put it there because the AU will run without water and they needed the sensor in the aluminium to make it work without cooking the motor... You need to run your EF thermostat housing and put the temp sender back in there... The AU thermostat housing has no holes for sensors... Cheers, Tim

Wasnt aware of the interchangeability of the heads from ea to au. Au heads are better then?

I wired that sensor instead of the thermostat housing one as it still works without water.

i am told au valves are bigger... And the valve stems or something can be replaced, where they no longer make the earlier size? Obviously the vct head has the variable cam where the early one doesn't... Jim mock reckons the ef xr head is the best of all the heads... Something about bettter intake ports... But the au head i put on has nice enough looking ports... Your ed, ef, el tickford heads had larger valves too...
As for that sensor... Makes good sense... I didn't know if it'd be calibrated to suit the el computer... So i didn't want to run into a issue... With the ed wiring loom the thermostat housing is the better place for it because the ed doesn't have that plug on the engine loom... It is on the computer loom... Cheers, tim

I see, wonder if there is much to gain, I have noticed that au heads get alot noiser then the others. Might be due to the VCT and the veins blocking up.

Noisiest part of my install is the cleaned AU injectors... Which apparently have a better spray pattern, hence why I'm running them... My VCT was in bits and I had to devise a plan to get it back together... But there is a number of springs in the phasor and the book says they take the "knock" out of it... But combined with oil and cam loading mine makes no noise at all, doubt it ever will, design of the insides of the phasor appears pretty refined... What are you referring to with "veins"?

I was told the VCT heads have oil galleries like "veins" controlling some aspect of the VCT and these clog up (on poorly maintained vehicles of course).
I'd hope that a fresh rebuild wouldn't be noisy. |

Na the head is the same after my inspections... The oil comes out of the side of the block where the gauge sender screws in... Up the steel pipe into the phasor housing on the front of the head... The solenoid then allows the oil to enter the front of the phasor where you bolt it to the cam shaft and then pressurises in there and causes the inner sleeve to slide, turning the cam... When the solenoid reverts back it blocks the oil line from the sender and allows the phasor to drain back through the housing and out down into the timing chain...
Other than that the head is the same... Only thing that really makes it a VCT head is the whopping hole in the front... Oil to the head is still sent up via three head bolts and lubricates the cam and overhead gear... Cheers, Tim

I've believe the placement of the temp sensor is to gain a more accurate measurement of average cylinder head temperature as opposed to running it directly in the path of the water pump.

The reason for it was the design that an AU could run without any water at all... It stopped people being stranded... If it let the water go, as mentioned, the temp sender would still work as it is in aluminium... When the computer noticed the motor getting hot it would take turns in shutting down one or cylinder at a time and turning it into an air pump... Obviously performance was severely degraded but it stopped you being stranded... Determining engine temp without water is impossible if the sender is in air... Hence the main reason for the change... Thermostat housing would give just as good of a reading because the water in the head heats to its temperature and then goes past the sender before entering the rad to cool...
An AU was pinched from the Ford dealership here, mid repairs with no water in it... They drove it away and it was found outside a school (not burnt out thankfully) and it was towed back and the repairs finished on it (after fingerprinting and such went on) and it ran fine once more... Not a bad idea when you think about it... Cheers, Tim
