What is the downside to using an unenclosed pod filter?

Man, seriously, you've been on this site as long as me, your post count is as high, surely you've seeen the millions of threads just like this (judging by your post count you've probably replied in half of them)? Surely you know how the search works to find the threads just like this one?
And to answer your question it can depend on the engine. Not from experience, but what I have been told and lead to believe on turbos they often put the pod close to the turbo and not boxed, as a. the air will be sent through the intercooler and cooled down later, b. the box could create a flow restriction and c. the longer piping from the filter to the turbo could create more lag/hesitation. On a non boosted car prolly find that it makes quiet a difference with the air temperature of the air going into the engine, hence the great encouragement to use a shielded and boxed in setup, also the induction piping size effects your torque somewhat. |

I was thinking that a pod filter would suck in more hot air. Just needed confirmation.
Why use them then? Reason Im asking is I want to change the intake system on the Coupe, mainly because the way Hyundai originally designed is s**t. Now I saw some metal piping and an open pod filter and the guy said it was real good for him. Now twr your exactly right. I have seena nd replied to these threads but its no the normal pod filter thread. Can I run metal piping, changing the course of hte intake system and not use a pod filter? |

No reason you can't run metal piping and change the plumbing route to the throttle body. Post a picture of your engine bay see what options you'vegot.
Monza (the Autotechnica brand) make easy to fit basic heatshields, they wouldn't do that much but better than nothing and it's not hard to make your own, when they say you need to box them you don't, you mearly need to put a shield between the filter and the hot engine, there's no reason to seal it in at the front of side it all that is there is the body of the car... |

Some advice mate before you shell out 100 big ones on a K&N panel filter.
The majority of people on this site have only used 3in pod filters on the existing plastic intake piping all with 3inch metal/alloy piping. These pods will only give a max of 2-3rwhp over the panel filter setup. I personally spoke to the bloke that help develop and dyno tune different intake and pod filter setups for Simota Australia on various cars including honda civics, preludes, falcon 6 etc... They found on a dyno that a 3.5in-4in oiled pod filter with a suitable intake pipe produced huge gains compared to a small 3in pod. 10rwhp gain was seen on EF.EL and Au 6 falcons with this size pod and intake tube. Next time your at autobarn get a 3in neck pod out from the shelf and hold it next to a 3.5in-4in neck pod. You will see why!!!!!!!!!!!!! By the way i have a K&N panel filter and an AU XR8 snorkel in the shed, but they spend there days collecting dust now........................ note: hyundai compared to falcon's might be different as falcon's are heavy breathers. cheers.................. |

All you've done is shown that you have compared a tapered original factory piping (that is smaller than 3" at the front) to 3.5" piping with a pod, woopdy doo. |

is it just me or is this guy, falcon4litreOHC, completely around the wrong way.
check his sig for exhaust system tips. bigger intake pipe and a 2.5" down to 2.25" tip, that has to equal more power. RETARD!!!
