G'day,
What tips would you give to someone looking to get a mirror finish from a EB I6 intake manifold? I've already started sanding down the casting dimples/ paint to get it smooth (and I am planing to move up in sanding disks) but I havent had much experience with polishing stuff. What spec of wet and dry paper would I need near the end? Is there any other methods for shine? |

Do you have a big grinder ?? Fit a pollishing wheel to it and some polishing wax for alloy [I think its the white one].Put on some OLD clothes and way you go...

if you have a bench grinder at home you can get a calico wheel from you local harward, i think the wheel and attachment is around $30 or so. they work great use white wax or soap as some people like to call it. you can get this from the hardware store also for around $10-15. use 1200 grit wet to get it reasonable. the wheel with a bit of patients should take care of the rest. you can finish it off with a metal polish AUTOSOL is a good one to go with... other than that i think there is a tech document that is much more in depth that can help you out with the rest.

flapper wheels work great at removing cast dimples fast... get them at bunnings n mitre 10... cheap too!... saves alot of time... autosol is a great product.. and the fast buff wheels realy brings ot the shine well...

lol think i did it the hard way...various grades of wet and dry, did it by hand, took 10hrs over 2 days. Wasnt quite a mirror finish but was pretty close to it. i used from normal sand paper at the start to rough it up, really course stuff, was more like gravel paper, then went through most grades of wet and dry. Best grade from memory to finish with was 1600, 2000 gave a blured look.

all i did for mine was used a dremel or similar electric grinding tool smoothed it all out and removed bits i didnt want, then started at 120 grit wet and dry to 320 then 400, then 600, then 1000 and then autosol a few times, mine came up pretty good, i did but the rocker cover polished and the bbm polished aswell so i saved myself some time but still polished them up a bit more to how i wanted them.

I polished mine to a good shine using an angle grinder, file and sandpaper in that order, it's the perfect way to sacrifice a weekend and there are frequent 'f&%k this' moments, lol. I ended up sparying it gloss black, looks sweet imho.

It does look nice, not sure about the painted radiator overflow bottle tho :p How hard was it to put in the BA airbox? bolt in? |

I think everyone has a 'f&%k this' moment when there is a tedious task such as polishing a BBM lol. I just got to start on mine...damn I'm lazy hahaha. phong =P~

as matt said flapper wheels are great to start with then sand by hand to get the shape right again,then work your way up in grit and finish with a metal polish. it will take a while and a lot of hours.
if you want to see a hand polished bbm that shines just look in my gallery..

It's a bit of a pain but persitance is the key,lol. There's a small bump in the inner guard that needs to be bashed in, the original EF rubber cushion things where the bolts go through need to be used as the BA items are too bulky, and I had to melt and mould the underside of the Tickford snorkel to fit nicely over the fan shroud and clip properly into the air box. The box is huge and only just fits under the bonnet. |

It does look nice, not sure about the painted radiator overflow bottle tho :p How hard was it to put in the BA airbox? bolt in? i like hiding my overflow tank too.. its not very sexy to look at... lol.. mine's blaack aswell.. and ive a BA airbox in my e-series too... pretty easy... bolts pretty much straight in.. just had to hammer down a lil ledge that is moulded into the guard that sits right below the bottom half of the airbox.. as the ba air box is alot taller than the e-series boxes and so needed every bit of space available to be able to stil close the bonnet... |

i had a bbm done at the polishers,cost $80 for top and bottom and only took half a day. mirror finish. ring around,there would be somebody down mt gambier way
