The AU I have is getting real poor fuel consumption lately. I'm actually selling it but i want to fix this up first.
I ran a scan tool on it, and it came up with an open circuit knock sensor.
Would this cause poor fuel economy, or is it just a timing thing thats affected?
I also noticed the temp gauge hardly moves at all. Even on a warm day it moves just over the line where C is.

I was thinking of replacing the knock sensor and thermostat first, but the car runs nice and the thermo fans kick in and out as per normal.

Any Ideas??

i know that poor fuel economy is normally an oxy sensor issue.. especially if its over 100,000 ks old..
I'm not sure about knock sensor, but possibly with the timing out of whack, it might produce poor economy...

nar no smoke at all, the car runs perfectly, dosent miss or hunt for idle or anything. it just uses ALOT of fuel.

I myself have an au2 and i cant seen to get more than 350 to 400 k's out of it around town.i drive it pretty slow through the week to work and back and the average wont go bellow 14.5 - 15. i have no clue on what it is.its runnin abit rich and ill check it out at work next week but really dont know why i dont get more k's. i brought it because i wanted an economical car but with options and that was comfy.lol

could be due to alot of things, give the car a good service, check all the basics(thermostat, oxysensor even air filter), i found i get better fuel economy from runnning a thicker oil(15w40) then the reccomended(10w30). my cars temp gauge barely changes either, but i can get it as low as 9.5l/100km.
it also comes down to how and where you drive your car

i went down to the car and d/c the temp switch at the back of the head and the gauge went to C and the thermos come on hard. i might get the variable pot onto it and check it against the actual coolant temp to work out whether it's running in warm-up mode and if it is, the temp sender could be stuffed.

i also cleaned the o2 sensor and told my bro to drive it around for the next few days and see how it goes.

if its still the same i might have to look into it further to work out what it is and it might even be worth it for me to buy a couple of bits from the wreckers and swap them one by one.

the economy was great when i bought it and that was with old oil, old plugs, old fuel and air filter.

stupid cars!

I put a new thermostat in it and it's fixed the cold temp and it dosent miss at idle like it used to.
the gauge now sits between N and O.

with regards to fuel economy, i took it for a 50-60km run and the dte only went down 10km so i think i've fixed it.

I will post results in a week or so, as i will be using it this weekend.
