Stockstandard is right. The general rule is a bit of roughness.Smooth mrror finish causes fuel to puddle on the walls.Rough finish keeps it suspended in the air stream better.

I thought you were just a tosser Roughly what grit should I use on the intake side? 36? I'm assuming an air powered dye grinder will be to harsh, a dremel should do the job nicely I would think? |

maybe someone whos done this before (not looking at you stockstandard ) could write up a doco on DIY porting/polishing of the I6 head, from mild to wild?
Personally I'd love to know how to do it, not something extremely over the top, just a mild job to suit some of the off the shelf stg2 cams....

Personally I'd love to know how to do it, not something extremely over the top, just a mild job to suit some of the off the shelf stg2 cams.... if can get a nonXR head from an EF/L i'll do a doco up along the line of one i saw on fordsix.com. someone there did an old log head as project for something they were studying. It started with flow testing the stock head to get a base line. then through the weeks differnt things were tried and flow retested for each mod. it'll take a few months to get through every thing i want to try aswell as show what happens when a few of the common things are done, showing good or bad results |

There are a few guides on the net giving basic porting advice
http://www.sa-motorsports.com/diyport.shtm http://www.chevyhiperformance.com/techarticles/95518/ Some people (like the windsor boys) are lucky enough to be able to get head porting guides telling them exactly how to shape everything to get good results. Unfortunately no such thing exists for the I6 head. My advice (keeping in mind I have very limited experience) is to go easy. Refining the finish and smoothing the air's path is going to help. Hogging out alloy with your grinder to make huge ports is going to ruin a head unless you really know what your doing.

dont workk the plans is just to tidy up the dags. I will be removing only dags and casting marks and just using a buffer wheel and polishing paste on the exhaust ports
Will get the head decked as well |
