Did you take much port material out or just blend the port roofs/floor into the seats?

Gday Wakinshaw, On the intakes i took a small amount out of the bowl area but mainly to blend to the valve insert, the main area where I removed material was at the entry to the port, it tapers off quite quickly creating a bump so I blended the first 25/35mm for a smoother transition. On the exhaust the original port is quite small and goes around a slight bend, so I reduced the short radius, took out about 2mm of material blending back into the port roof, looking down the port it heads to the left so I took out about 2mm from the right hand side radius (could have taken more I think). The casting on the head are supprisingly good but there is still a fair bit of room for improvement. Hope the effort has been worth it spent 22hrs in total but I am pretty fussy, probably could have gained the same results in 2/3rds that time but im more than happy with results.

Good stuff... better to take your time, your not paying yourself by the hour
Im keen to hear about the results. On a side note, whats involved in stripping and re assembling the head? Any special tools needed? |

Exhaust ports. Got the valves fitted today, got a three angle cut done and had the leading edges on the valve face chamfered. Its the only mods done so far but it lays the basis for alot more.

Only removed one set of valves so I could have a prtactice removing material before attacking the new head. I used a couple larger sockets and a F/G clamp, had to rattle or knock the socket on the spring side to loosen the collets. Had the engine shop remove and refit the valves and springs.

Are you going to get your handy work flow benched? Would be very intresting to see what improvement has been made.

As much as I'de like to the the fairmont station wagon is my wifes family taxi and its been off the road for nine days now while i figured out what was wrong and then indulged myself with the port work. I hope to have pacemaker PH4499's and a lukey 2 1/2 exhaust fitted this week and then visit Kwinana drag strip, should get a few laughs in the gradpa wagon.

Wow, I didn't know you could remove the valve guide down level with the port floor, obviously the valve stem is still there but that mod has got to be a big flow gain. Iv'e kept the soft head so I can have a play and see how far you can take the porting. I was pretty conservative having never done any thing like this before and having a brand new head, but seeing photos like that one makes me realise you can go a fair bit further and not stuff things up, food for thought for future mod's. Yes Mandurah is a pretty special place, you take a bit for granted when you live here.
