I've got an el xr motor with ~150k on it...
Just lately i've noticed that at times my car wont idle properly.. fair enough the isc might not be doing its job properly.. but sometimes i'll slow down to some lights and the revs will drop down and car will shake a bit then stall.. At times i've had to leave car in neutral and hold revs up. Lately i've noticed that the car loses all power and can do funny things when its about to stall.. The other day turning onto fitzroy st in st kilda from lakeside drive i was turning right.. car started to cark it.. i put foot down a bit and the car was shaking heaps.. I pull over car stalls.. restart.. it sounded like a wrx.. missing on a few cylinders for no particular reason? I get out and checked map sensor was plugged in okay and it was.. I restart it again and this time its perfectly fine? Lately it has been decent temp, mid 20's and i have been sitting in traffic. TFI Module people? ISC? Auto trans? what do i kill first.. |

Hmmm... similar symptoms to mine - which i suspect to be TFI module failure (im yet to properly diagnose this).

Start off with a self test on the ECU and see if that shows up anything.
Possible other causes might be leads/plugs or coil, well there are numerous possibilities really, just have work your way through them. If you suspect the ISC, unplug it, idle it up with the throttle stop and see how it goes for a few days.

That fault your describing will be a stuffed oxygen sensor. Exact samething was happening to my EL that you describe. I ran the fault codes and from memory it had code 762(oxygen sensor lean?). Anyway replaced that and reset the ecu and never had another problem.
When the tfi module starts playing up the ign will cut out completely and your tacho will drop back to 0rpm, then bang the engine will come back to life again. Cheers...........
