Hey guys, my local mechanic suspects my gudgeon pin needs replacing on my 97 EL falcon, its causing quite a loud knocking noise in the first cylinder only when its under load, take the lead off and it goes away. he said to budget about $1500-$2000 to get it replaced as the motor has to be pulled out. Does that sound about right? seems quite pricey to me.

that would be about right, as basicly the motor would have to be pulled down to just the crank and block. If it was the case, a new engine would be a better option

it depends if he is doing a minor re build or just a bodge rod piston gasket replacement???
it would work out cheaper to replace the engine with another el engine or doing a bit of modifying and fit an au engine... |

yea i spent that much, because to my understanding it would eliminate the problem, and at the time it seemed more logical to just do that than replace the whole thing, or buy another car, as i only had the car for about 4 months. Mechanic was a friends uncle who works at Brakes Plus in Frankston. Dont think i will be going back seeing this is the 3rd time i have tried to get this problem solved

i would lean towards another engine.. if costs are an issue?
if the engine is going to be pulled down to fix a gudgion pin? well really the crank main and rod bearings should be replaced again and if its that far apart well the rings should be replaced aswell.. do you see where this is going? i think you might be chasing your tail with this engine.. you could just replace the bad piston, rod, gudgion? but what next?? the engine might start burning oil ect or another bearing or gudgion might start knocking next?? so imo unless its a complete pull down and full rebuild its not worth it.... |

yea i understand what your saying. ill have to think about it. would it be more benificial to get an AU engine instead of an EL? if so what are the pro's and cons of the two engines?

also, if i decide to go with an AU engine i know the K frame has to be cut to fit the sump. is there any other mods i will need? will i need new headers, alternater etc?? Also i have had a look on ebay, there are quite a few reco AU engine for around $500 that are Bare Long. What does Bare Long mean?

Long motor...head to sump....no externals..as in w/pump, oil filter, harmonic balancer, manifolds, oil pressure switches, water necks....etc.

if you have $2000 to spend go and get an exchange short motor WITH A WARRANTY (most have at least 20 000km/ 2 years) and put your head on it.

If your going to try and salvage this motor, i'd be stopping use now.
you're already looking at needing all the cylinders bored, if not honed. new piston/s, new conrod/s
