My EL Gli has a red rocker cover, much like the engines in the Fairmont Ghia's which I know are all equipped with the tickford XR6 engine, but 'cos of the quieter exhaust in the Fairmont Ghias, it's rated slightly less in power. I have noticed that all non-XR engines in EL Falcons have black rocker covers, except the Fairmont Ghias and XR's. So if my rocker cover is red does that mean my GLi has the tickford engine ? Has anyone else got an example like mine. ?

What I'm trying to ascertain is if the factory did install these engines as an extra option in the EL GLi's or has my Gli been re-engined, or even, maybe the previous owners just put a red rocker cover on it, but I don't think that's the case, I can't find lots of silastic squished out of the gasket that would indicate a rocker cover change....

Someone could have fitted a red rocker cover. Does the rocker cover have any markings.

Check the front of the head and see it it has a T cast into it.

Here it is, it looks exactly like the ones on the Fairmont Ghia's, the XR6 ones have the wing logo on it don' t they ?

I can't check the front of the head tonight, I need to remove the serp belt cover, it's too cold down in the garage this evening, haha ;)

I took the serp belt cover off today and guess what ?
No F'n T, it's a stocker...
What kind of wankers would put a red rocker cover on a stock EL GLi ? haha
Not like you can see the engine to show it off and make the car look better.

But maybe now it's worth it.

Since I got it I put on 17" chromies, lowered springs (not super-lows, thank christ, cos I bottom out enough with 20mm ride drop! superlows are 50mm ride drop) and sports shocks. Put a pod filter in the airbox, added the snorkel off an AU XR8, it's much bigger, way better flow to match the extractors, got that tip off the the tech section here.

Also added a trip computer from the Fairmonts/Fairlanes and upgraded the body control module and added the extra wire from the dash to the trip computer (where the stock GLi clock was, replacing it, again another tech tip from this forum). I also installed red LED's for the dash (it looks great, another tip from this site).

yea, but would be much cheaper probably to get an off the shelf ECU upgrade that plugs into that bottom port on the silver box in the passenger footwell, with the extractors and pod-filter and AU-XR8 snorkel I already have, might get another 30Kw on top of the stockers 157Kw, that would put me at 187Kw, way better than the XR6 engine at whatever it was, 164Kw or something like that

J3 chip, extractors and a pod filter = 30Kw..........

Never going to happen mate.

You will need headwork, cam etc to achieve that.

What would be a rough guess for the improvement without the cam, headwork ? 15-20Kw maybe.
I couldn't remember the name of the chip upgrade, J3 was it!

Pod Filter = waste of money and time. Stock Panel filter will outflow the Pod Filter.

XR8 Snorkle = minor improvement, need to upgrade full intake to see any real improvement. Kight see 2 -3 Kw.

Extractors = +5 to 10Kw. Has the rest of the exhaust been upgraded?

I was reading somewhere about the original filter being better than the pod-filter.
Probably switch back. Cheers. It was given to me anyway, so not like I lost $ on it.
Yea, the exhaust is 2.5 inches all the way back.

POD filters have been myth busted plenty of times... See Here for one of many videos on the topic.

The J3 chip to my understanding has the most benefits when the other mods already mentioned (cam, headwork, have been done.. ) but hey.. what do i know.. My cars still sitting in the garage on flat tyres since putting new motor in.

Gonna go sulk over here now..

yea, I think the minimum you'd need with the J3 get the benefits is to at least do the induction and exhaust if not the cam etc

I hear ya mate, I bought a set of 4 cross drilled and ventilated disc's pads, front wheel bearings etc for mine almost a year ago, still haven't put 'em on, too lazy to do it, haha
