http://www.norcom.net.au/~bpt/Ford%20Thermostats.htm
ive been looking at these for my bf 4.0 n/a, car is pretty stock besides the typhoon second intake and exhaust. but i was talking to a mate and he said that running the car cooler could lead to engine wear coz its not getting up to the normal operating temp. would this be ok to run i and every drive car |

I have forever used lower temp thermostats in all my cars, stock or worked. I use no hotter than 82 deg thermostats, as the factory ones in the aussie climate imo dont leave enough room for error. I have never had any "failures" because of this, its a stupid myth and some cars may use a tiny bit more fuel, probably not even noticable.

I recently fitted a Powerstat (82C). No problems here except that I suspect there may be increased fuel consumption but can't be sure as I've done other mods as well. The car definitely runs cooler - in my EF the needle sits on the "L" in the "NORMAL" display.
As I mentioned, other mods come into play but there may have been a small power/torque increase as well.

Id say it would be fine. Im using a lower temp thermostat in my EF i6 and havent had any issues at all with it. It may be running a bit richer than before cause it takes longer to warm up but i dont mind as its probably stuff all difference. Id have to agree with PIMP_LTD, with a climate as warm as Australia's it would be safer to run a cooler thermostat. Im in New Zealand where the climate isnt as warm and the needle could still creep up fairly high on hot days in traffic with a normal temp thermostat (evident in my old man's XR6). Since fitting the lower temp one, i barely ever see the needle touch the L on NORMAL on hot days , it usually sits on the line before that so the engine is running pretty cool now

I've had the Power Stat in my turbo for the last 18 months, no probs. came with the Stage 1 kit so couldn't say what difference it has made. but definately no probs

You can pick up a Tridon 82 degree thermostat to suit an e-series for about $20 from any good auto parts retailer. Been running one for about 2-3yrs now without a problem. Temp mainly sits on (L) but gets up too (M/A) when the ambient temp is around 38-43 degrees.

Yeah supercheap and repco should stock them, the Tridon ones that is. I got mine from a parts place cause my old one was stuck open, when i asked for a replacement thermostat they only had the lower temp one in stock so i took it . The powerstat ones you can get from BPT.

yeah I just went to BPT on a bludge from work and it was the cheapest thing they had that "claimed" to add power LOL so I bought one while perving in their garage *drools* and then got outta there before they could talk me into spending a grand on the dyno (wouldn't have been difficult if I had the coin)!
I'm such a wanna-be... wouldn't have felt so hard-core if I'd just bought a stocko in a plain white box from Repco - getting your s**t from a performance workshop is way tougher even if it is the same at double the price!!

So the motor runs cooler internally, so has anyone noticed any difference in torque when changing to a powerstat thermostat ? even the slightest?

In theory it should increase torque a little - my car certainly feels stronger than before. Although my car had been suffering power-reducing problems since December; after fixing all that crap (head gasket, leads, cooling system) it's finally feeling good, and the Powerstat was fitted in the middle of all that other work while the car was still running crap (only changed it because I had to replace the housing gasket anyway!).
If the engine temp goes down, the intake temp also goes down...
