Hi. I was driving home from work last night and when i got home i noticed some oil on my driveway. I had a quick look at it and it was clean and red in colour which led me to believe it was power steering fluid.
So this morning i got under the car and had a look and found aq slow drip from a cable that comes out of what i can only asume is the power steering pump. Heres a pic: its leaking from the rubber part (circled in red). Just woundering, what is this part called? so i can replace it? Any ideas if there is anything i could use to stop the leak? Also should it be fine to leave it like that for a while and just top up the fluid if needed? The leak is fairly slow, or could that do damage? Thanks in advanced. OH By the way the car is a ED falcon |

Thats the power steering pressure switch. A pretty common fault on these as they age.
I'd be getting a new switch from Ford (they aren't that expensive) as you will find at some stage the thing may go pop and pump all your p/s fluid all over the engine bay. Bit of a prick to change, but there are plenty of threads on here that will give you advice on how to do it quickly and painlessly! |

oh and they are not too hard if you can move your arms around. We just changed one in about 10 mins and that was not done on a hoist but on a trolley jack as you can only do it from underneath

Well i just got a price from repco, $21 not to bad. Just woundering, is the switch just the black square looking thing, or does it include the hose that connects to it? The leak seems to be comming from just above the square thing, so would i have to replace the hose that connects to the sqaure thing? if that makes any sense?
cheers. |

it's not a hose, it's just a rubber sheath around a cable and the plug

Also, i couldn't find any info using the search function on how to replace it. Do i just unscrew the metal thing that its connected to that goes into the pump and pull the sensor off ? and when i fill the fluid back up does it need to be bled or anything?
Any help much appreciated, need to replace asap, leak is getting worse and some of the oil got on the cat and started to smoke which cant be good lol. |

it's the steering rack not the pump.
you unplug the sensor by pulling off the injector style metal clip then unplugging it, then unscrew it, then screw the new one in and plug it back up, being sure to replace the clip.

Replaced today, was alot easier than i thought. Just screwed it off, removed clip put new one on replaced clip and filled back up with fluid. Steering works better than ever now, doesnt make any noises or shudder when i do a full lock =P
Was funny i tried for for the part and they wanted $70, tried auto pro and they wanted $60, and they wouldnt believe me when i said repco has them for $21! Realy makes me wounder what the purpose of this is, seems to me it would be better if it was just sealed off, just another part to go wrong |

it senses the pressure of the ps fluid in the rack, so the car can raise the revs when you are steering at idle.
i had mine blocked off when it was pissing out and i needed the car, never bothered replacing the sensor and the car never stalled while parking or anything.
