Hi all!
Noticed a leak in my power steering unit last week. The pump was dry as a bone and I had to refill it every 2 days. Brought a hose thinking it was that as the leak was running down the hose. $170 later, the leak is still there! Now I am thinking its the pump. How much does a recon one cost? Thanks

Well the mechanic I ditched send he could send the unit to a power steering place and they'd be able to fix it, which would be cheaper than buying a new unit.

The PS pump has a pressure switch under the steering box i think, the switch has a tendancy to leak for some reason or an other, might be an idea to remove the damned thing and have a look at it and see if thats the problem. I got a leak, is'nt all that bad got to top it up every few months or something. i'll have a look at my own pressure switch at sometime

E-series and Powqersteering leaks go hand in hand.
Seal Kit is the way to go, dont buy a new/2nd hand PUMP!! SEAL UP UR OLD ONE! |

My power steering leak recently on my EA Falcon was due to the Power Steering Pressure Switch worn and was leaking down the bottom end near the high pressure hose. Replaced the switch with a new one for $35 and did the job myself. All fixed now... I believe this is a common problem with the E-Series.

I replaced that seal twice and it still leaked from there. Even replaced the hose with a second hander, still leaked. It appears to me that there is a seal internal to the coupling to allow the hose to move but still seal. The solution for me was a rubber washer found inside a compressed air coupling. That way it seals the inner cone part of the tube directly to the fitting. Mine was just dropping a drop or two on the alternator which I have heard makes them fail so I was keen to stop the leak. There is/was a guy on EBAY selling new hoses for $69 but they are a pain to replace.
Cheers TW.
