Ahoy there,
Well my power steering pump is leaking from somewhere, and the steering is heavy. Also quite noisy when making strenuous turns. And in my Kmart service report thing, power steering low presure hose is leaking. So anyway, called up a place in moss st (hoon heaven in Brisbane) and they said they'd pull it apart, do the rotors, seals, etc. for $250 - $280. Could also just do the seals for cheaper, but then I told him how the steering is heavy, so apparantly it's a pressure problem and the rotors and other stuff inside need to be done. I called Ford and they sell the pump new for $168. I don't spose that low presure hose would come with it? How much to fit a new one in? So what is my best course of action? Take it to moss street to fix my current one? Buy a new unit and get someone to fit it? Or buy a new one and have a go myself? If it's a complicated process than I think taking it to a professional is the way to go. Thanks guys, and sorry if this is the wrong forum.

Yeah sounds a bit like that, but how much for labour you think? Or is it a dead easy job I could do myself?

Low pressure hose shouldn't cost very much, its the high pressure one thats expensive for obvious reasons.
Price up the hose from ford. Don't forget to also include power steering fluid (1 litre) I wouldn't expect it to cost more than $200 total With the workshop quoting $280 to rebuild your pump, the maths say buy the new one from Ford. It is a basic job that you could do yourself, a workshop manual will help.

I just had a quick look at the manual mate and it looks a piss easy job to change the pump. I would source one and have a whack at it myself. Just remember to bleed the system when you are finished which takes about 5 mins.

What manual you talking about anyway? I've got the EF Gregory's one.

Yeah, same same page/165 Pt4. In car adjustments and minor repairs.
It may be worth just dumping the fluid and renewing it cause it doesn't say anything about pump replacement in the noise in power steering section. Low pressure may mean it has a blocked outlet filter inthe flow control valve though. |

Have you tried a Repco or Bursons. I've bought that kind of stuff from them before for a lot cheaper.
I remember a reco change over pump with 12 months warranty being $110 and a hose being about $50. |

Thanks arm, i'll call around.
EDIT: Called Repco, I don't think anyone knows about these new prices for new Ford pumps. I know it's recent because I called again (FORD), and the guy was like "$168, really?". Repco will sell me a reconditioned one, exchange, for $313, what a rip! Repco dude needed to know the diametre of the low pressure hose, but both are roughtly $17/m. So how do I find out what type I have?

If it is the PS pump, they can be had for $140 exchange. Only takes 30-45 mins to swap them over.

Was comparing Ford's price to the one I got. |
