hey guys ive got a leak at the back of the power steering pump on my EL, just wondering if i have to replace the whole pump or whether there is another way around? i have installed a drip tray to ensure none of the fluid lands on the alternator and its been like that for a good 6 months thanks

If it's leaking from the high pressure line at the uni joint, then it is best to replace the high pressure line. Costs about $80 for the line and is pretty simple to replace...just gets messy. If it's the nut between the hose nut and big nut on the back of the pump, then you might be lucky to get away with just a simple O-ring.

An inner ring which means you have to pull the power steering pump apart, or the outer ring which can be found on the big nut once you remove it from the casing. There should be 3 nuts...biggest against the pump, medium sandwiched between 2 nuts, and the small nut holding the high pressure hose to the medium nut. There are I think o rings at each stage...one O-ring at the end of the high pressure hose which is pushed up against the medium nut, medium nut (I think...not 100%) has an o-ring on it and the largest nut has an o-ring between the head of the nut and the start of the thread. The inner o-ring is sandwiched between the pump housing and internal part which I don't think fail as much as the other o-ring. Best thing is to clean up the area and find the exact location of the leak. Most likely it's the union part...it's the part that usually fails first.

yeah im pretty sure it is the union mate. so i just have to undo the biggest nut and check the o-ring (which will be between the nut and housing?) and hopefully thats the problem?

Nah remove the union nut first...use a plumbing spanner if possible, if not standard spanner should do the trick. I do not recommend using a shifter, you will round the nut. Use a big spanner to hold the big nut still...try not to undo the big nut, if it does move, just tighten the nut back up again. Once you have removed the union nut, replace the o-ring on the end of the high pressure hose. Connect it back up and see how you go, if it still leaks from there, you will need to replace the high pressure hose with a newer design one...which doesn't have that stupid union join. Also...if you can, drain the power steering pump using a pipette/hose or something...you will have fluid going everywhere if you don't. I'd try the other nuts first before you attempt to remove the big nut...the big nut serves also as one of the pump casing retaining nuts.

hey mate it was in between the big nut and the housing that the o-ring was shredded, so i got a power steering pump replacement kit and put a new o-ring on but i must have made a mistake coz wen i started the car and dry steered all the power steering fluid p****d out, so im thinking i hav installed the o-ring incorrectly (which i no isnt the hardest thing to do haha, but my o-ring was that shredded it was in 4 pieces so i couldnt actually see where it originally went) so i have it placed between the big nut and the thread of the nut that gets placed into the housing, but if i tightened it too tight the o-ring would stretched and buckle out of the gap so im thinking its not meant to go there or its the wrong size ring.
any help much appreciated thanks guys |

To make sure we are on the same page...I took a picture.
I assume you have taken out the big nut which is the one picture to the right. The left one is the adapter nut which allows the high pressure hose to connect to it. If I remember correctly the o-ring goes in the groove closest to the head of the bolt (ie. away from the thread). Can't remember what size o-ring unfortunately. If it's not the big nut and you're talking about the adapter one...then the o-ring just sits on the end of the thread...you can still see the old o-ring squashed onto the tip.

Use some plumber's tape on the threads does wonders and stops the leak its a common problem that they leak at the fitting's

all done replaced the oring on the smaller of the two nuts you had in picture phongus, the one the high pressure hose joins into, so that stopped that leak but now it is leaking from the high pressure hose join, it has become a bit loose, is there a certain way to tighten this? if you need pictures i can take some and post some, thanks a lot for your help phongus and thanks sv

Hate to say it but you'll need to buy a new one. The new hoses don't have the union join and you don't require the use of the intermediate adapter nut, so straight from the high pressure hose straight into the big main nut, so less chances of a leak occuring down the track. There is a power steering specialist in Thomastown that I think sold the hoses for $80-90. Ford sell them too for a little bit more, but I think they are the same.

ah crap, well its just loose where it attaches to the nut and can move it, power steering still seems to be working fine, it just leaks a little bit every now and agen, for now im thinking of putting it in and putting some solastic around the joint and see how that goes.
So if it is stuffed does that mean the power steering wont work? and wat is the function of this hose? thanks agen mate |

oh and also is it an involved process to change it over to the new hose without the union joint?
