Hey guys, I was taking my girlfriend to school this morning and I heard this rattling noise, took off at the next lights and felt that I had no power steering.
I got to the school, popped the bonnet and my power steering belt had come off the pulleys. So I put it back on and tightened it, driving home it came off again. So i took it to the mechanic who I got to do it, and he said he's never seen it happen unless the balancer comes off, and he tightened it and I was pulling into my drive way and I had like half power steering, popped the bonnet again and the power steering belt had turned upside down on the pulleys and the groove was facing up. Loosened it, put it back on the proper way, tightened it real tight, reversed up the driveway, drove back up and it happened again. Any ideas?

same thing happens to my brothers EBII, if he gives it a decent rev the belt comes off. He has had it happening for years and has never fixed it.

I would suggest the harmonic balancer needs replacing. It may have broken rubbers and could have slipped forward causing the belt to be out of alignment.

Well i've been through 2 power steering belts in a day and this is beginning to piss me off, especially going back to work tomorrow 10-6:30, i cant even fix it tomorrow. I might take it somewhere and get them to check the harmonic balancer.

I've worked out that it happens pretty much only when I take off quick at the lights, or when I drop the clutch in any situation (skids etc.)
The tensioner pulley is new, I'm thinking maybe it's the power steering pump pulley. Under load something seems to throw the belt off the pulleys, I guess the jolt of the motor moving when the clutch is released just moves one of the pulleys too much and the belt comes off.. Can anyone shed light on the situation? Because driving an EB without power steering is far from a walk in the park or an enjoyable experience. Cheers

Just a question....get some-one to push the clutch in & out, engine running, while you look at the travel of the crank shaft ( the harmonic balancer) backwards & forwards......

sometimes the teeth on the back of the bracket wear away just enough to allow you to tighten the belt but slip over under heavy load.
i had this happen with the alternator.

Yeah I'll try this but I think it is only when its under heavy load (etc dropping the clutch at like 3000RPM + into gear)
