Heyall,

was driving through heavy peak hour traffic yesterday with the aircon on and the temp gauge climbed to the R in NORMAL, which i have never seen before. The owners manual says that this is acceptable but I say it isn't!

How do you deal with this?

Cheers

I say it is acceptable as well.. seriously would not worry about it.. turn the aircon off and open the windows.. let nature do the work.. if your really worried dump the radiator, give everything a real good flush, new coolant in off you go. the R in normal is fine on the track mine gets up to there, you will find when you get moving again the temp will drop straight back down again.

alternatly put a toothpick in there to stop it going above M and you will never see it go to R again. :P :P :P

I wouldn't be too worried if it drifts up to the 'R' I'd be more worried if it the 'R' became the norm.
Watch how it goes over the next few days.

well, so far the tootpick idea is the leading contender!

ok guys, it's no drama then, it does drop straight away when the radiator gets fresh air diffusing on it.

Definitely nothing wrong with it going to R. If you think about the car in front of you who is pushing out hot exaust fumes onto your cooling system, its surprising that most cars don't get really hot. Having done my stint as a cabbie, sitting on taxi ranks with the 3 drivers in front of you having their engines running all the time.. I'm surprised I didn't ever overheat my cab.

Mine sits on the M all the time in normal operation. Nothing wrong with it at all.

There are a LOT of mis conceptions about engine temps out there and how to get them down/up, what to do in different seasons etc, and one of the biggest ones is that a colder engine is better.

If you think that a colder engine is better, you could TRY and tell Porche that they're running they're engine's too hot @ up to 140C, but I think they'd laugh at you.

no no, i realise that there is an optimum temp range that a motor should run at to make full use of the oil's and thermal expansions/conductions.

It's just that im a little paranoid about warping/cracking the head coz of the dimensions of the engine itself, sort of like a shoe box shape if that makes any sense?

as soon as it gets to the top of the R, the thermos come on full speed and it'll drop back to 1/2 guage again.
if your REALLY worried, whack the aircon on and put the fan on 3, thermo's will kick in full speed and it'll drop pretty soon.

put a switch in to switch out your transmission temp sensor. ecu will see open circut to tranny temp senor and will assume tranny is hot kicking in boath cooling fans.
