A couple of years back i had mine tested, machined, valve grind and valve stem seals replaced for $220 but that was in Melbourne.

Just a straight test, with you removing all valves, etc should only cost around $100. That would include a bit of a clean and the pressure test. Anything you want over the top of that, ie shaving, welding, new seats, etc costing more. If you got everything thing done, ie a full reco it could cost upwards of $700.
These are prices on the gold coast thought I wouldn't think Melbourne would be that much different.

I would be looking at taking the head to your local engine reconditioner, firstly they would test for softness/hardness, mine was to soft so they supplied a new head with my valve gear machined and fitted for $780. If your head is not soft they will do a crack/pressure test, not sure how much this would cost, just ring as many places as you can ask the same questions and you will end up getting a fair Idea of cost and what needs to be done.

thanks for the advice. i'll be ringing around tommorow. but i have a starting problem now. car started 3-4 days ago now i got nothing tryed to jump start and still nothing and yes it is in park.not sure of the battery condition cause my multimeter has s**t it self and i don't have a hydrometer. we did swap the battery for one out of a running car (ef sedan) still wouldn't start. i'm going to do a search now but any help would be good, thanks in advance (need the car running so i can turn it around and get it in the garage facing my work bench. cause i'm a slack a** and don't want to walk to far to get my tools).

got some more quotes on the head testing today. $45 for the test and $50-60 to strighten the head if needs be. bit better than $395 to do both. found out the car wouldn't start due to the smartlock/immobilser unit, under dash near drivers left knee. hit it and car starts, any one else had this problem.

You can get exchange cyl heads (3.9 & 4.0) from Repco, (they are GEM exc cyl heads) for about $440. Ready to bolt on, just need the appropriate gaskets, etc for the job.
