Hi there. Hoping someone can help with my problem. Ride is an XH 6 cyl Longreach Outback ute. Twin fuel tanks from the factory. Recently on a long trip, I ran out of fuel on the main tank before I could switch to the reserve. It coughed and spluttered but got going with out stopping. Must have sucked a load of s**t from the tank as it wouldn't rev or go above 60 kph. I was on a country trip, so pulled over and removed the in line fuel filter. It was blocked with black gunk. I shook and flushed it but without much success. To get me to the next town, I got a philips head screw driver and put a hole straight through the filter. This gave me a short term fix and got me to the next town, where i fitted a new genuuine part filter. Now my problem is it is very hard to start . Cranks over for quite a while before firing. I thought it may have been a dud new filter so put another new one on, but same prob. It is hrad to start on either tank, but once running is ok and will rev to 5000 and tow a trailer without problems. Any ideas, suggestions, help appreciated.

some dirt has gone through the hole you punched and clogged up your injector(s)!

Thanks. So should i remove each injector and clean/ blow out with air line or what ? Never done work on injectors before.

no get them cleaned professionally by someone cause it may cost you 100 bucks but its better to get them done properly

if you are way out in the sticks it might be ok for you to do yourself. I would probably put an extra fuel filter inline with your current one though if you happen to get dirty fuel in the future!!

I recommend the Ryco Z373 filter. Easier to get a seal because of the aluminium housing. The steel ones are a pain to seal and require massive torque to get them to seal.

sounds like your bush mechanic skills maybe requierd to fix the injectors now.

I tried with a ryco ally filter, but managed to cros thread the threads. Replaced with a steel one, couldnt get it to seal, so put the stock back on
 Should go back to another ryco i think

in the top of the injectors there is a filter basket. if u want a quick fix get a self tapping screw and thread into top of injector and pull the baskets out
they would catch most of the gunk |

I also managed to cross thread the aluminium fitting on the ryco filter. The steel originals are a b**** to get tight. Do you think my hard starting could be due to a small air leak at this point ?

Pull the filter baskets out, clean, and put them back in. Take care not to damage them!

You wont have an air leak you'll have a fuel leak.
Fuel leaks need to fixed ASAP. IE do not drive the car until the fuel leak has stopped completely. I thought I had sealed a steel fuel filter once but it dripped once every 5 minutes, which is not acceptable. No leaks at all. If you have problems cross threading the Ryco filter just by a few to save you hvaing to go back. I wont use any other filter. |

you'll most probably find that the O-rings & seals has already harden & brittle once removed, causing fuel & vacuum leaks if reused again.
